Former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh was granted bail by the Supreme Court on Friday in a case of alleged financial irregularities, but he is unlikely to walk out of jail before early next week. The CBI court in Alipore will first determine the conditions of his release, and his lawyers must complete the formalities, senior lawyers said.
The Supreme Court bench of Justice M.M. Sundresh and Justice Prasanna B. Varale granted bail citing Ghosh’s prolonged incarceration and the slow progress of the trial. The CBI had filed a chargesheet in the case before the special court in Alipore.
The trial court will set the terms of his release, including the amount of the financial bond. With the court closed for Puja, regular proceedings will resume on October 27.
“The legal team will have to file a bail execution plea before the judicial magistrate in charge of the court during the holidays, and that won’t be before Monday,” a senior police officer responsible for security at the court said. “The legal team will also have to submit a physically certified copy of the Supreme Court’s order.”
Senior lawyers said Ghosh could walk free once the magistrate sets the bail conditions, as no other cases are pending against him.
The CBI’s anti-corruption wing arrested Ghosh in September 2024 over alleged financial misconduct and fraud during his tenure as principal. The investigation followed the rape and murder of the junior doctor at RG Kar on August 9, 2024.
The agency charged him with offences including criminal breach of trust by a public servant, cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy. A CBI officer also alleged that Ghosh manipulated merit scores to illegally accommodate 24 undeserving candidates as house staff at the hospital.
In September 2024, Ghosh was shown as arrested in a separate case concerning the alleged delay in registering the FIR in the rape and murder, misleading investigators and tampering with the crime scene. The case also named Abhijit Mondal, then officer-in-charge of Tala police station.
In December 2024, a Sealdah court granted bail to Ghosh and Mondal in that case after the CBI failed to file a chargesheet against them within 90 days.
The Supreme Court’s bail order is in the financial irregularities case.
