From the price of petrol to the cost of feeding a family, the warning signs of public anger are often visible long before crowds fill the streets. France’s unrest offers Nigeria an uncomfortable opportunity to examine what happens when economic pressure, distrust and frustration collide, and what leaders must do before ordinary hardship becomes a much bigger crisis.
Imagine a Nigerian mother standing in front of a market stall in Lagos.
She has come to buy rice, beans, tomatoes, garri and a little meat. She has already calculated what she can afford before leaving home. Yet, as the trader calls out the prices, she begins removing items from her shopping list.
The meat can wait.
Perhaps the tomatoes can be reduced. Maybe the family can manage with less rice this week.
She is not buying less because her family suddenly needs less food. She is buying less because the money in her purse can no longer stretch as far as it once did.
Now imagine a commercial driver in Abuja who has spent much of his day on the road. Before he calculates his profit, he must account for fuel, repairs, daily expenses and whatever remains to take home. His passengers complain about fares. He complains about the cost of operating his vehicle. Neither necessarily believes the other is being unreasonable.
In Port Harcourt, a small business owner may be trying to keep a generator running through an unreliable power supply. In Kano, a parent may be wondering how to pay school fees while keeping food on the table. In a university hostel, a student may be calculating whether to buy a meal or preserve the money for transport.
These people may never attend the same meeting. They may support different political parties, practise different religions and disagree about what Nigeria needs.
But they understand one another’s problem.
Life is becoming a calculation of what must be sacrificed next.
That is why the latest unrest reported in France deserves attention in Nigeria, thousands of kilometres away.
The French demonstrations described in our earlier report grew from concerns about public education before drawing in people with wider grievances over living costs, public services and the government’s response. The unrest was also accompanied by disturbing reports of violence, damaged businesses, public property destruction and injuries.
Those developments should not be reduced to a romantic story about people taking to the streets, nor should the destruction be used to dismiss every grievance behind the demonstrations.
There is a more important question for Nigeria: what can a country learn when economic frustration spreads beyond one group, one workplace or one demand and becomes a much wider argument about the way society is being managed?
Nigeria does not have to experience the same events to learn from the warning signs.
The country has already experienced mass protests, including the 2020 #EndSARS demonstrations, which brought young Nigerians together around police brutality and broader concerns about accountability. The nationwide protests of August 2024 also brought economic hardship and demands for government action into sharp focus.
The circumstances of those movements were different, and France’s experience cannot simply be transplanted onto Nigeria. But both countries offer an opportunity to examine the relationship between hardship, public trust, peaceful protest and government accountability.
Here are five lessons Nigeria should take seriously.
Do Not Wait For The Streets To Explain What The Markets Have Been Saying For Months
One of the biggest mistakes a government can make is to treat public anger as a sudden event when the conditions behind it have been building for a long time.
Before a crowd assembles, there are usually conversations.
They happen in buses, markets, offices, university hostels, churches, mosques, workshops and family WhatsApp groups. They appear in complaints about transport fares, food prices, rent, electricity bills, school expenses and wages that seem to disappear before the month ends.
A person may complain about the price of bread today, joke about the cost of petrol tomorrow and quietly borrow money to settle a bill the following week.
Individually, these moments can look ordinary. Collectively, they can reveal something much more serious.
When people repeatedly find that their earnings cannot cover basic expenses, they begin to question more than the price of a particular product. They start asking whether the economic system is working for them at all.
This is where Nigeria must pay attention.
The International Monetary Fund’s May 2026 report on Nigeria estimated that poverty had reached 63 per cent under the national poverty line and that 27 million Nigerians had faced food insecurity in the autumn of 2025. The report also noted that higher fuel and food prices were expected to put further pressure on vulnerable households. These are estimates and projections, not a description of every Nigerian household, but they underline the scale of the challenge.
Behind every national economic indicator are people making decisions about what they can afford.
A government may point to improving economic growth, investment figures or better fiscal indicators. Those measures matter. But they do not automatically tell a struggling household whether it can afford dinner, whether a young graduate can find work or whether a small business can pay its electricity bill.
Economic progress has to be assessed at more than one level.
There is the economy that appears in official reports, and there is the economy experienced by people who must pay for food, transport, housing, healthcare and education every day.
The two are connected, but the benefits of growth do not necessarily reach everyone at the same speed.
The lesson is simple, hardship must be measured not only by what the economy produces, but also by what ordinary people can actually afford.
Nigeria needs credible, accessible information about food prices, household purchasing power, employment, wages, transport costs and the reach of social support. Government agencies should not wait for public outrage before paying attention to these indicators.
They should also listen to people outside formal consultation rooms. Market women, commercial drivers, artisans, teachers, students, farmers, informal workers and small-business owners understand pressures that may not be immediately visible in a policy document.
Listening does not mean promising to satisfy every demand. It means recognising a problem early enough to respond before it becomes more expensive to solve.
France’s experience offers a reminder that a protest may begin with one immediate complaint while drawing strength from several unresolved frustrations.
Nigeria should not wait for those frustrations to converge before taking them seriously.
When Government Removes A Cushion, It Must Explain What Replaces It — And Show The People
Few economic decisions illustrate the tension between national policy and household reality more clearly than fuel subsidy removal.
In May 2023, President Bola Tinubu announced the end of the petrol subsidy during his inauguration. The policy was defended as a way to reduce a costly fiscal burden and free public resources for other priorities.
But a policy can have a defensible economic objective and still impose painful immediate costs on households.
The removal of the subsidy pushed petrol prices sharply higher, with consequences for transport, food distribution, electricity generation and the cost of running businesses. The impact spread far beyond the petrol station because fuel is an input into so many parts of Nigeria’s economy.
A trader does not need to own a car to feel the effect of expensive petrol. The cost may reach her through the truck delivering her goods, the generator powering her shop or the transport fare she pays to reach the market.
A family that rarely buys petrol directly may still pay for it every time food or other goods are moved from one place to another.
This is why economic reforms cannot be judged only by the amount of money they save the government. Their consequences for households must also be measured, explained and addressed.
The argument is not that every subsidy should remain forever. Subsidies can be expensive, poorly targeted and vulnerable to abuse. Governments must be able to examine whether public money is being used effectively.
The harder question is what happens to the savings, and whether the people who bear the immediate cost can see a meaningful benefit.
In October 2026, the Federal Government announced a package of measures intended to cushion the impact of global fuel-price pressures. According to the Presidency, these included NNPC Retail’s temporary decision to forgo its petrol retail profit margin, additional support for vulnerable households, subsidised credit, expanded compressed natural gas deployment and efforts to reduce transport and logistics costs. The government said the package would not restore a blanket fuel subsidy.
The announcement raises the right questions for public scrutiny.
How many households will receive assistance? Who qualifies? How much support will each eligible household get? How quickly will it arrive? How will the public know whether the money has reached the intended beneficiaries? What happens to people who are eligible but excluded from the programme?
These are not hostile questions. They are reasonable questions about the implementation of a policy that affects millions of people.
Support programmes are only useful when people who need them can access them. A scheme that looks impressive in a press release but fails to reach its intended beneficiaries cannot provide meaningful relief.
Nigeria should therefore insist on published eligibility rules, clear funding figures, regular implementation reports and independent scrutiny of results.
Government should also explain the difference between temporary relief and long-term economic policy. Citizens deserve to know what a measure is designed to achieve, how long it will last and what happens when it ends.
There is a crucial difference between telling people that reforms will eventually benefit them and showing them what is being done to help them survive the transition.
A government cannot ask households to absorb economic pain indefinitely on the strength of promises alone.
If a policy imposes immediate costs, the response must be visible, measurable and fair. The public should not have to guess where the savings have gone or whether the promised relief exists beyond official announcements.
Public Trust Is Not A Luxury To Be Considered After The Economy Improves
Economic hardship becomes even more politically sensitive when citizens do not trust the institutions asking them to endure it.
People may be more willing to accept a difficult policy when they believe the burden is being shared fairly, public money is being managed responsibly and leaders are being honest about the sacrifices required.
The opposite can happen when citizens believe that ordinary people are being asked to tighten their belts while those in power remain insulated from the consequences of their decisions.
Whether every such perception is accurate is a separate question. Governments should answer allegations with evidence, transparency and independent oversight rather than assuming that public suspicion will disappear on its own.
Consider a family whose income has fallen.
The parents may agree that spending must be reduced. But if one person continues spending freely while everyone else is told to make sacrifices, the dispute is no longer simply about money. It becomes a question of fairness.
The same principle applies to public policy.
When governments ask citizens to endure higher costs, they need to explain the purpose of the policy, demonstrate how public funds are being used and show that public institutions are accountable for their decisions.
Nigeria has a particular reason to take this lesson seriously. Fuel subsidy reform was presented as a way to improve public finances and create room for other spending. The public is therefore entitled to ask whether the expected benefits are materialising, which programmes are receiving the resources and how their outcomes are being measured.
That scrutiny should apply across government, not only to one administration or one policy.
It should include procurement, public contracts, social interventions, infrastructure projects, public appointments and the delivery of essential services.
Transparency cannot be reduced to publishing a statement after criticism has become unavoidable. It requires information that people can understand and use to assess what government has actually done.
There is also a human dimension to trust.
When a parent asks why a public school lacks teachers, when a patient struggles to access healthcare or when a business owner cannot keep operating costs under control, an answer about national economic indicators may not address the immediate question.
The government may have a broader explanation. It should provide one. But it should also explain what is being done about the specific problem the citizen has raised.
This is where communication becomes more than public relations.
A polished statement cannot substitute for a functioning school. A press conference cannot replace reliable electricity. A promise of future prosperity cannot pay today’s transport fare.
Communication matters because people need to understand the reasons behind decisions. Delivery matters because people need to experience the results.
Both are necessary.
France’s reported unrest highlights the danger of allowing public-service grievances and economic frustrations to merge into a wider dispute about political accountability. Nigeria should not assume that distrust will remain confined to social media or private conversations.
The country has already seen how quickly public grievances can become a collective demand for answers.
The lesson is not that government should fear criticism. It is that public institutions should earn confidence through consistent performance and transparent decision-making.
Trust is built when official promises can be checked against everyday reality.
Young People Need More Than Speeches About The Future
A country can spend years telling its young people that they are the leaders of tomorrow while failing to answer the questions confronting them today.
Where are the jobs? Can they afford further education? Will their qualifications lead to employment? Can they build a business without being overwhelmed by costs? Is there a realistic path to independence, housing and a decent standard of living?
These are not abstract questions for young Nigerians. They shape how people plan their lives, what opportunities they pursue and whether they believe that effort will produce a worthwhile result.
France’s student-led demonstrations, as described in the earlier report, began with concerns about education: teacher shortages, school facilities and the quality of learning. Those complaints then connected with wider frustrations over living costs and public services.
The connection is important.
Education is not simply a service delivered inside a classroom. It is part of the promise that a young person who studies, develops skills and works hard will have a reasonable chance to build a future.
When classrooms are poorly equipped, instruction is disrupted or students believe that opportunities are unfairly distributed, that promise can weaken.
Nigeria should look at its own education system through that lens.
The country needs classrooms where students can learn, teachers who are supported, vocational training that connects to real opportunities and universities that prepare graduates for a changing economy. It also needs pathways into employment and enterprise that do not leave young people feeling that their only options are to struggle indefinitely or leave the country.
No single programme can solve all these problems. Nor should government pretend that every graduate can be guaranteed a particular job.
But policies should be judged by whether they expand genuine opportunities.
Are young people acquiring skills that employers need? Can small businesses hire and grow? Are vocational qualifications respected? Can young people access finance without being trapped by impossible repayment conditions? Are public education budgets producing measurable improvements in learning?
These are questions that deserve evidence rather than slogans.
Young people also need meaningful ways to participate in decisions that affect them.
Consultation should not be limited to inviting a few students to a government event, taking photographs and announcing that the youth have been heard. It should involve sustained engagement, clear responses to proposals and explanations when demands cannot be met.
And listening must not be confused with agreeing to every demand. Young people, like everyone else, can disagree among themselves. Their proposals should be evaluated on their merits, costs and likely effects.
The point is that they should be treated as citizens whose experiences matter now, not merely as an audience for speeches about tomorrow.
Nigeria’s political leaders should also resist the temptation to treat every youth-led demonstration as a security problem before establishing what the demonstrators are asking for. Public safety matters, and violence must be addressed. But peaceful protest is also a legitimate way for citizens to express grievances.
When young people complain about education, jobs or living costs, the first response should include a serious examination of the complaint.
That does not mean ignoring violence if it occurs. It means refusing to let the conduct of some individuals automatically erase the concerns of everyone else.
France’s experience offers a warning about what can happen when a student movement becomes a wider expression of frustration.
Nigeria should respond by making education, employment and youth participation part of its everyday governing priorities, not issues to be rediscovered whenever young people take to the streets.
Protect The Right To Protest — And Refuse To Excuse Violence
This may be the most uncomfortable lesson of all because it requires two positions to be held at the same time.
Citizens have a right to express grievances and participate in peaceful demonstrations. They should be able to criticise public policy, demand accountability and assemble without being treated as enemies of the state simply because their message is inconvenient.
At the same time, peaceful protest does not give anyone permission to assault people, loot shops, burn buildings or destroy public property.
The distinction is essential.
In France, the demonstrations described in our earlier report included large crowds with varied grievances alongside incidents of looting, arson and violent confrontation. The presence of destruction does not establish that every demonstrator participated in it. Equally, the existence of legitimate grievances does not excuse those responsible for criminal acts.
Nigeria should apply the same principle.
A peaceful protester demanding lower living costs should not automatically be treated as a criminal. A person who attacks a passer-by or sets fire to a building should not be shielded from accountability simply because the act took place during a demonstration.
The law should be applied to individual conduct, supported by evidence and subject to due process.
Security agencies also have responsibilities. They must protect lives, prevent violence and safeguard public property, but their response should be lawful, necessary and proportionate. Allegations of excessive force or misconduct should be investigated independently and transparently.
These principles protect both citizens and officers.
If peaceful demonstrators believe they will be treated as violent criminals regardless of their conduct, trust in the authorities can deteriorate. If people believe that violence will be tolerated whenever it is committed under the banner of a popular cause, public safety and the rights of others are put at risk.
Neither outcome serves the public.
Nigeria’s experience with #EndSARS remains relevant here. The 2020 demonstrations began as a campaign against police brutality and developed into a wider demand for accountability and reform. The movement also became associated with a violent period in which people, businesses and public infrastructure suffered serious harm.
Those events should not be used to flatten the entire movement into a single description. The demands, the peaceful demonstrations, the actions of individual participants and the responses of security forces must be examined separately.
That is how a country learns from a crisis instead of merely fighting over its memory.
Authorities should communicate clearly about where demonstrations can take place, how public safety will be managed and what restrictions, if any, apply. Where restrictions are imposed, the reasons should be explained and the measures should be lawful.
Protest organisers should also communicate their objectives, encourage peaceful conduct and reject attacks on people or property.
The media has a role as well. Reporting should distinguish verified facts from allegations, avoid presenting arrest figures as convictions and refrain from treating dramatic images as a complete explanation of a complex event.
A burning vehicle may make compelling television. It cannot, by itself, explain why a protest began, who started the fire or what most people in the crowd wanted.
A country must be able to defend peaceful dissent and condemn violence without confusing the two.
That is not a contradiction. It is a basic test of whether public order and civil liberties can be protected together.
The Question Nigeria Should Be Asking Itself
It would be easy to finish this story by saying that Nigeria must avoid becoming France.
But that would be too simplistic.
Nigeria and France have different political systems, economic circumstances, histories of protest and institutional challenges. Their grievances are not identical, and the events reported in one country cannot be used to predict what will happen in the other.
The useful comparison is not about which country is closer to chaos. It is about what governments do when public frustration becomes difficult to ignore.
Do they investigate the conditions behind the anger? Do they explain difficult decisions honestly? Do they publish evidence showing whether relief programmes are working? Do they protect peaceful demonstrators while holding people responsible for violence to account? Do they treat young people’s concerns as serious policy questions?
Or do they wait until the streets are crowded before discovering that people have been complaining for months?
Nigeria’s economic choices will continue to involve difficult decisions. The country must manage public finances, encourage investment, expand employment, improve infrastructure and protect vulnerable households. There will be disagreements about how to achieve these objectives, and not every policy will satisfy every group.
But the existence of difficult choices does not remove the responsibility to explain them, measure their effects and correct failures.
When the government says a policy will create long-term benefits, it should show how progress will be measured. When it announces relief, it should publish the details and report whether the intended beneficiaries receive it. When citizens raise complaints, it should respond with evidence and a practical plan rather than dismissing the complaints as noise.
And when public anger becomes visible, the response should not begin and end with the number of people arrested or the roads that have been blocked.
Those details matter when a demonstration occurs. They do not replace the work of understanding why people came out in the first place.
Before The Next Crowd Gathers
Return to that Nigerian mother at the market.
She does not need a political theory to know when her money is no longer enough. She does not need to understand every detail of fiscal policy to recognise that feeding her family has become harder.

The commercial driver does not need an economic briefing to know when fuel and maintenance costs are consuming his earnings. The student does not need to attend a policy seminar to understand the consequences of poor learning conditions or limited opportunities.
Their experiences do not automatically tell us which government policy should be adopted. Sound policy requires evidence, careful analysis and an honest assessment of trade-offs.
But their experiences should be part of the evidence.
France’s unrest is a reminder that public anger can begin with a specific demand and grow when people with different problems start to recognise a common frustration. The violence reported during the demonstrations is also a reminder that the destruction of property and the injury of people can deepen a crisis without resolving the issues that brought citizens onto the streets.
Nigeria has an opportunity to learn from both sides of that story.
It can pay closer attention to household hardship before it becomes a political emergency. It can make the effects of economic reform more transparent. It can strengthen public trust by demonstrating accountability. It can invest in the opportunities young people need. And it can defend peaceful protest while refusing to excuse violence.
None of these steps is a magic solution. Each requires funding, competent implementation, honest communication and the willingness to correct mistakes.
But the alternative is to treat every new complaint as an isolated incident, every demonstration as an unexpected disturbance and every public demand for answers as a problem to be managed rather than a signal to be understood.
That approach risks missing the bigger picture.
A country does not have to wait for its streets to fill before it begins listening. It does not have to wait for a school to become the centre of a protest before examining whether students are learning. It does not have to wait for workers to march before asking whether wages can meet the cost of living. And it does not have to wait for a crisis of trust before making public spending easier to scrutinise.
The most important lesson from France is not that Nigeria should expect the same scenes. It is that governments should pay attention to the conditions that make mass frustration possible, and respond while peaceful solutions remain available.
The question is not whether Nigerians are allowed to be angry. Citizens will disagree with their leaders, criticise policies and demand better services. That is part of public life.
The real question is whether the institutions responsible for governing the country can hear those complaints, respond fairly and demonstrate that public sacrifice has a purpose.
Because long before a crowd gathers, people are already telling their stories.
They are telling them at the market, at the bus stop, in the classroom, in the workplace and around the dinner table.
The challenge for Nigeria is to listen before those stories become one national cry.
