A Durban man who spent years living on the streets while hoping to find his way back to his family is finally getting that chance, thanks to the power of an online community.
Missing Person South Africa shared the update on 10 October 2026, announcing that Hendrik Frederik Nortman had been reconnected with his family after the organisation published his story and appealed for help.
Hendrik had originally travelled to Durban in search of employment but eventually found himself without shelter, spending several years on the streets while holding onto hope that he would one day be reunited with his loved ones.
How one follower changed everything
After the appeal went public, a single follower stepped forward with a contact number. That one piece of information proved to be the turning point. Jeanette Fouche Dreyer, who had been assisting Hendrik in his search, used the number to reach one of his sisters. From there, Hendrik's family was able to communicate with him directly through Jeanette.
Plans are now being made for Hendrik to return home, where he is expected to receive medical care and live in a safe, supported environment. While the arrangements were still being finalised at the time of the announcement, the breakthrough marked a significant moment for a man who had been separated from his loved ones for years.
Missing Person South Africa credited both Jeanette's determination and their community of followers for making the reunion possible, noting that a single shared post can reach the one person who holds the answer a family has been searching for.
