Sports fans remember big swings and big saves. They also remember the simple words that match the moment. Sometimes just one short sentence from a famous face can sum up an entire city’s October mood.
That is what happened this month in Ohio. A football star spoke up for his hometown baseball team at a pivotal moment. Baseball fans, football fans, and plenty of casual scrollers all paid close attention. Travis Kelce and the Cleveland Guardians now share a story worth knowing.
Why Kelce’s Cleveland message went viral
After the clinching win, Kelce celebrated Cleveland’s run by saying, “You just gotta believe, baby.” His enthusiastic remarks quickly circulated online as the Guardians celebrated a dramatic trip to the ALCS.
Kelce watched Game 5 at Progressive Field during the Chiefs’ bye week. He joined the Guardians’ ownership group as a minority investor in May 2026. Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell was also among the recognizable fans cheering from the crowd.
The 2-0 victory completed a remarkable comeback after Cleveland lost the first 2 games of the series. The Guardians became the 11th team to come back from a 0-2 deficit and win a best-of-five postseason series.
Guardians dig out of an early hole
Cleveland lost the first 2 games at home to the White Sox before winning 3 straight elimination games to take the series. The mood after the decisive victory stood in sharp contrast to the disappointment that followed Game 2.
The Guardians then won both games in Chicago. Game 4 ended 9-5 after Cleveland erupted for 6 runs in the sixth inning. José Ramírez homered and finished with 3 RBIs to help force Game 5.
Cleveland had already authored a historic rally in 2025. The Guardians fell 15½ games behind first-place Detroit in July before recovering to win the AL Central, the largest deficit ever overcome by a team that ultimately won a division or league title.
The comeback odds were very slim
History said Cleveland was in deep trouble after falling behind 0-2. At that point, teams taking a 2-0 lead in a best-of-five postseason series had gone on to win 83 of 93 series, an 89% success rate.
After Cleveland tied the series, history became more encouraging. Of the previous 18 teams that had rallied from 0-2 to force Game 5, 10 went on to win the deciding game, or 56%.
Chicago was also a major surprise in 2026. FanGraphs gave the White Sox a 1.2% chance of reaching the playoffs entering the season, yet they held at least a share of first place for 96 days.
José Ramírez swings Cleveland into the ALCS
Ramírez crushed a two-run home run in the fourth inning of Game 5, delivering a crucial moment. The pitch was a 78-mph curveball that traveled just 0.74 feet above the ground, measuring approximately 9 inches high.
Kelce shot out of his seat and bounced with childhood buddies. He later called it “one of the coolest moments of my life.” He also wore a Ramírez jersey to the game that night.
The slugger had a rough regular season by his lofty standards. It was one of the worst seasons of his 14-year major league career. October brought a postseason power surge that Cleveland badly needed.
Pitchers turn Game 5 into a strikeout show
Cleveland pitchers struck out 21 White Sox hitters in Game 5 at Progressive Field. That was the most ever in a winner-take-all postseason game and set an MLB record for any 9-inning regular-season or postseason game.
Fun fact: The White Sox struck out 75 times during the 5-game series. Cleveland’s total was 11 more than the previous record for a best-of-five postseason series.
Gavin Williams finished the series with 24 strikeouts, the second-most ever in a best-of-five postseason series. He also became just the third pitcher in postseason history to record the final out of one elimination game and then start his team’s next elimination game.
A hometown kid becomes a team owner
Kelce joined the Guardians ownership group as a minority investor in May 2026. He grew up riding public transit downtown to Progressive Field for games. Those childhood memories made the announcement feel personal for him.
Kelce called himself “just a kid from the Heights living the dream” after the deal. The Guardians carry a franchise value of $1.7 billion. His stake is a minority share and not a controlling one.
Chiefs teammate Patrick Mahomes joined the Royals ownership group in 2020. That puts two Chiefs stars in baseball ownership inside the same division. Kelce planned a June 14 celebration at Progressive Field for the deal.
Kelce’s baseball memories run deep
Kelce threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Guardians’ 2023 home opener against the Mariners at Progressive Field. The throw landed well short of catcher Shane Bieber and skipped past him to the backstop.
Kelce also defended his Cleveland fandom during the 2024 postseason after some fans questioned his neutral clothing at an ALCS game at Yankee Stadium. He said he had been a Cleveland sports fan his entire life and that people in his suite knew he was cheering for Cleveland.
Baseball outings have also become familiar appearances for the Kelce brothers. Travis and Jason attended Game 1 of the 2023 NLCS between the Phillies and Arizona Diamondbacks at Citizens Bank Park.
What comes next for the Guardians
Cleveland is facing the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALCS. The series began Monday, Oct. 12, at Tropicana Field after the Rays finished as the American League’s top seed.
As of Oct. 18, the series is tied 2-2 after Tampa Bay’s 7-3 victory in Game 4. Game 5 is scheduled for Sunday at Progressive Field, with the series guaranteed to return to Tampa Bay for Game 6.
This is Cleveland’s second ALCS appearance in 3 seasons under manager Stephen Vogt. The Guardians’ ALDS clincher against Chicago was the 43rd winner-take-all Game 5 in modern Division Series history.
Kelce’s message fits a team that already fought back from a 0-2 ALDS deficit. Cleveland now needs 2 more wins against Tampa Bay to reach the World Series.
