Deadly storm Isaias is forecast to bring heavy rains, potential flash flooding and possible tornadoes along its path Sunday, Oct. 11, as the former hurricane makes its way through the Appalachians and mid-Atlantic region.
The storm came ashore as a Category 2 hurricane near Destin, Florida, late on Oct. 9, tearing down trees and snapping power lines. At least four people have been reported killed in the storm, two each in Alabama and Florida, authorities said.
The storm is now a post-tropical cyclone moving northeast, according to the National Hurricane Center.
What is Isaias' storm track and threat today?
The National Hurricane Center predicts Isaias will drop heavy rain across the central Appalachians and mid-Atlantic on Sunday, Oct. 11, bringing potential isolated and urban flooding. There's also a chance for some tornadoes in the Piedmont and coastal plain area of Virginia and North Carolina.
The storm will also bring strong wind gusts across the southeast, particularly near the southern Appalachians, the center forecast. Scattered power outages and downed trees remain likely, the center said. Additionally, ocean swells continue affecting the Gulf and southeastern Atlantic coast.
Isaias broke a two-year drought of U.S. hurricane landfalls, with the most recent being Hurricane Milton in October 2024, two years to the day before Isaias made landfall.
What power outages remain following Isaias' arrival?
Significant power outages remain in Alabama and the western Florida Panhandle, the area where Isaias came ashore, according to the USA TODAY power outage tracker.
In Conecuh County, Alabama, for instance, 97% of accounts are without power, representing about 566 addresses. In Bay County, Florida, home to Panama City, about 15,100 outages remained as of Sunday morning, representing about 11% of accounts, according to the tracker.
In Milton, Florida, crews were working to repair downed power lines after the storm snapped trees and power poles, and tore roofs off some buildings.
Who died from Hurricane Isaias?
In Alabama, at least two people are confirmed dead following the storm. In the Birmingham area, a person was killed when a tree fell on their home, and in Barbour County a driver died in a wreck that involved fallen trees, the Alabama Reflector reported.
Florida officials confirmed two deaths in Escambia County: a person pinned beneath a falling tree inside their home, and a man found inside a closed garage in which he'd been running a generator.
