Former Manchester United forward Dwight Yorke has openly confirmed his interest becoming the next Black Stars head coach.
Yorke is among the notable names linked with the vacant role following the departure of former coach Carlos Queiroz.
The Portuguese mutually parted ways with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) following a difficult start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, which included a 2-0 defeat away to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké and a 4-2 loss at home to Gambia.
Speaking to The Guardian, Yorke stated that the team’s immense talent makes the role an attractive prospect, provided the right team culture and player commitment are established.
“It’s a job I’d be interested in, given Ghana’s history and the players available,” Yorke said.
“You look at the squad, and your eyes open even wider. The conversation [I had with an agent regarding my interest in coaching the Black Stars] started there and then reached the media before I really knew it.
“The talent is there. Build the culture and get the players to buy in, and the football will follow.”
Yorke served as the head coach of the Trinidad and Tobago national team from November 2024 to March 2026. Prior to joining Trinidad and Tobago, the former United striker coached Australian top-flight side Macarthur Football Club, penning a two-year deal in July 2022 before being sacked in 2023.
In the wake of Queiroz’s exit, the GFA and the Ministry of Youth and Sports selected an interim technical team to manage the camp.
Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has been placed in charge as interim head coach, supported by assistant coaches Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram, alongside former national team goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda as goalkeeper trainer.
The interim team will guide the team for the 2027 AFCON qualifier doubleheader against Somalia in November.
The Black Stars currently find themselves at the bottom of the Group C table without a point after two matches.
Having missed out on the 2025 AFCON, the pressure is firmly on the team to win their upcoming matches.
