Bitcoin traded near USD 83,538 on Wednesday, October 14, after briefly approaching USD 83,900 during Asian trading. The cryptocurrency remained below USD 84,000 as investors awaited U.S. inflation figures that could shape expectations for Federal Reserve interest rates.
Bitcoin price tests USD 84,000 resistance
Bitcoin struggled to hold gains after recovering from recent declines near USD 81,000. Analyst Ali Martinez identified USD 84,000 as a key level on the four-hour chart, where the 50-period moving average has limited further gains.
The pattern resembles an earlier rebound from the lower edge of a rising price channel. However, similar patterns cannot establish that buyers will repeat the previous recovery.
Martinez said a four-hour close above USD 84,000 could support a move toward USD 93,000. That target depends on buyers keeping control after the breakout. Meanwhile, the daily chart placed nearby resistance at USD 85,000, followed by the USD 86,000 to USD 88,000 area.
Technical indicators offered mixed readings. Bitcoin's daily Relative Strength Index stood near 53, indicating neither strong buying nor selling pressure. Its Moving Average Convergence Divergence indicator showed fading momentum, with the main line below the signal line.
U.S. CPI inflation report puts Fed policy in focus
The Bureau of Labor Statistics scheduled September's Consumer Price Index report for October 14 at 8:30 a.m. Eastern. Annual inflation reached 3.4% in August, while consumer prices rose 0.4% during that month. Forecasts point to higher September inflation, partly because of elevated energy costs.
New York Fed President John Williams said on October 13 that another interest rate increase might be appropriate this year, but he currently sees no need for additional increases in 2027. The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate in September to 3.75%–4.00%.
A cooler inflation reading could reduce expectations for further rate increases and support demand for cryptocurrencies. A hotter reading could renew concern about borrowing costs and weigh on crypto prices. Neither outcome guarantees a particular market move. Producer price figures are due October 15.
CryptoQuant sees possible Bitcoin price bottom
CryptoQuant contributor XWIN Research Japan identified three measures suggesting that selling pressure may be easing. Bitcoin held on exchanges fell from 2.726 million BTC on September 20 to about 2.68 million BTC. Large holders retained more than 3 million BTC despite October's price decline.
However, the firm's measure of apparent demand remained below zero, although it moved closer to neutral. The researchers cautioned that a price bottom had not been confirmed. “Confirmation requires sustained ETF inflows, stronger U.S. spot buying and continued demand recovery,” the analysis said.
Separately, CryptoQuant analyst nocoffeenobrain reported increased transfers of Bitcoin held for more than a year. The analyst warned that moving older coins does not automatically mean their owners are selling. Some transfers may reflect wallet changes, including security-related moves. The researcher did not quantify how many transfers reflected actual sales rather than transfers between wallets.
Bitcoin traders watch support and resistance
Bitcoin's next price move remains tied to both economic data and market activity. A sustained advance above USD 84,000 could bring USD 85,000 and USD 86,000 into view, while a decline below USD 81,000 could expose support closer to USD 78,000 – USD 80,000.
Even if inflation comes in below forecasts, traders still face uncertainty around Treasury yields, oil prices and ETF demand. The CPI release will provide fresh economic information, but a lasting Bitcoin rally would require buying to continue beyond the initial reaction.
