Okakarara constituency councillor Uzeraije Tjaverua has called on local business leaders and private stakeholders to invest heavily in grassroots sports to help unlock untapped local talent. Speaking ahead of the upcoming Honourable Kapika Uzeraije Tjaverua Open Tournament on 30 October, the councillor emphasised that true youth development requires a shared commitment beyond government leadership.
The tournament will be held at Okozonduzu, near the Okondjatu settlement.
“This tournament, which will consist of football and netball, will be a great investment as it will support youth development. It will be a yearly event and will boost the community’s well-being and the local economy in our area,” he said.
He added that the competition will offer young people the opportunity to showcase their talents, develop their skills, and potentially progress to regional or national teams.
Tjaverua, affectionately known as Kapika, said sport is the greatest unifier and will bring people from different villages and backgrounds together.
“This prestigious event will promote peace, cooperation and a sense of belonging within the community. Sports activities encourage a healthy lifestyle, physical fitness and mental well-being,” he said, adding that the tournament will enable coaches and sports administrators to identify promising players who may represent Okakarara at a higher level.
Tjaverua emphasised that youth empowerment through sport is a key focus and aims to provide facilities where young people can showcase and develop their talent.
“Sport is more than just a game; it is an investment in our youth, our communities and our future. Through sponsorships and partnerships, businesses can help develop local talent, improve sporting infrastructure, provide essential equipment and create opportunities for young people to participate in competitive sport,” he said, adding that true sports development requires the shared commitment of local leaders, schools, and athletic associations working in tandem.
