Chiephobozou, Oct 23: The absence of the Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) at a women-led justice rally in Chiephobozou on Friday drew sharp criticism from protesters, with the Nerhema Youth Organisation (NYO) reportedly demanding the officer’s transfer.
The protesters had gathered to submit a memorandum and press for speedy justice in an alleged rape and sexual assault case involving a woman commuter. Their scheduled engagement with the administration was delayed after they were informed that the ADC was on leave.
The officer’s absence angered the gathering, particularly as the administration had reportedly been informed in advance about the rally and the planned submission of the memorandum.
The memorandum was eventually received by Headquarters Additional Deputy Commissioner Ruopfukuotuo Noudi.
The rally was organised by the Nerhema Women Organisation (NWO) in coordination with other community and civil society groups, seeking a fair and speedy investigation into the alleged assault, stringent legal action against the accused and stronger measures to ensure women’s safety.
The alleged incident took place on October 17, when the woman was travelling from Kohima to Chiephobozou. According to allegations, the taxi driver failed to stop at her intended destination and diverted towards the Chiechama–Botsa route, where the assault allegedly occurred.
The incident has prompted concern among local organisations over the safety of women commuters and the need for accountability.
The protesters warned that they would intensify democratic agitation if justice was delayed or denied.
