KUALA LUMPUR: The Multi-Lane Fast Flow (MLFF) toll system will incorporate digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) when it is implemented, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said today.
He said technology was already being used in road planning, management and maintenance, including at monitoring centres overseeing road operations.
“When it is implemented, it will of course use AI as well,” he told a press conference after opening the 13th Malaysian Road Conference and Exhibition 2026 here.

“We must move together with industry players globally. Technology is very dynamic.
“On AI, or artificial intelligence, we are already applying it in managing, planning and maintaining our roads,” he said.
He said this included roads under different jurisdictions, including federal roads, state roads and those managed by local authorities.
“Federal roads, state roads and roads under local authorities. We are using AI.
“Recently, I was invited to several monitoring centres where digital technology is used, and artificial intelligence is also being used,” he said.
MLFF is a barrier-free toll collection system that allows vehicles to pass through toll points without stopping at toll booths.
The government announced plans to introduce the system in 2022 as part of efforts to implement barrier-free toll collection on highways.
Under such systems, tolls can be collected using vehicle detection, digital payment systems and other supporting technologies.
The conference is being held alongside the sixth International Road Federation Global Asia-Pacific Regional Congress at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur.
The programme features 118 technical papers across 10 road engineering subfields and 112 exhibition spaces showcasing local and international industry players.
