The Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly has pledged to support the families of four pupils killed in the Aboabo Extension Junction accident and cover the medical expenses of the three injured children.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Asokore Mampong, Ben Abdallah Alhassan, gave the assurance in an interview on GhanAkoma hosted by Sir John following the tragic incident involving pupils of Mahad Islamic School at Aboabo.
The accident claimed the lives of four children, while three others sustained injuries and were rushed to the hospital for treatment.
As part of efforts to prevent similar incidents, Ben Abdallah said he had engaged the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) to facilitate the use of the Aboabo Post Office stretch by pupils to improve their safety and reduce road accidents.
Providing an update on the injured children, the MCE said he had spoken with two of them and confirmed that they were doing well.
He also disclosed that the driver involved in the accident was in police custody, expressing confidence that the legal process would take its course.
“The driver, as we speak, is in the custody of the police, and I know very soon he may be taken to court, and the law will deal justice to him,” he stated.
The tragedy has renewed calls for urgent road safety measures to protect schoolchildren and other pedestrians along the busy stretch.
The Assembly has also indicated its readiness to consider proposals for a footbridge, subject to technical assessments by road engineers, alongside other possible pedestrian safety interventions.
