SHILLONG, Oct 22: Two mountaineering enthusiasts from Meghalaya have been nominated to attend the Advanced Mountaineering Course (AMC) at the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) in Darjeeling from October 21 to November 17.
The nominees are Keliostar Pdai, a battalion constable of the 3rd Meghalaya Police (MLP) Battalion, and B Kyrmenskhem Lyngdoh, an NCC cadet from Sankardev College.
The Meghalaya Sport Climbing and Mountaineering Association (MeSCMA) is sponsoring their training as part of its efforts to promote mountaineering, strengthen technical expertise and encourage more people from the state to pursue advanced training in adventure sports.
The AMC is designed for climbers who have completed the Basic Mountaineering Course, generally with an ‘A’ grade, and wish to develop their technical skills and expedition experience. The programme covers key aspects of mountaineering, including route planning, equipment preparation, establishing base and higher camps, acclimatisation, technical climbing and summit attempts. It also emphasises team coordination, leadership, physical fitness, decision-making and safe descents in challenging mountain conditions.Through the initiative, MeSCMA aims to strengthen Meghalaya’s mountaineering community by helping deserving candidates access specialised training at a reputed national institute. The association said the training would equip the participants with the technical knowledge, discipline and confidence required for mountaineering expeditions, while enabling them to contribute to the development of the sport in Meghalaya. The initiative also reflects efforts to build local expertise and create opportunities for aspiring mountaineers to gain professional training and experience at the national level.
