People who drove through the western suburbs last week could be hit with fines from a new AI safety camera in Cottesloe.
The safety camera trailer was installed on Curtin Avenue, targeting southbound traffic between Eric Street and Napier Street from September 30 to October 6.
It was detecting mobile phone use, seatbelt compliance and speeding. Touching a mobile phone carries a minimum $500 fine and three demerit points, while incorrect seatbelt fines start at $550 and four demerits.
A Road Safety Commission spokesperson said the location was chosen based on crash data and local feedback.
“Camera deployment locations are guided by crash data and advice from the WA Police Force and Main Roads WA to ensure a wide spread of geographical deterrence but the message is ‘anywhere, anytime’, so put the phone away, click the seatbelt in and don’t speed,” they said.
“In the 12 months between September 2025 and August 2026, the rate of detected seatbelt and mobile phone offences dropped by 76 per cent.
“These figures show a significant change in behaviour, providing new insights into driver and passenger behaviour that has never been able to be captured at scale before.”
According to the RSC website, all funds from any infringements go directly into the Road Trauma Trust account.
This money is legislatively required to be spent on projects and programs which reduce injuries and deaths on WA roads, such as flashing lights in school zones and road safety infrastructure.
There are currently 10 safety camera trailers in operation across WA, with four in the Perth metro area, two in Albany, two in Bunbury and two in Geraldton.
Fixed cameras have also been installed on Kwinana Freeway at Gentilli Way and Mill Point Road, and more recently on Mitchell Freeway at Vincent Street and Karrinyup Road.
Data from the Curtin Avenue camera is not yet available.
Camera trailers were also in City Beach, Floreat and Wembley earlier this week.
The City Beach camera is targeting westbound traffic on The Boulevard after the Bold Park Drive roundabout, the one in Floreat is targeting both sides on Oceanic Drive near Arbordale Street, and the Wembley camera is targeting both sides on Salvado Road near Marlow Street.
