The guerilla editing that resulted in the removal of a Ben Roberts-Smith image by persons unknown from Sue Lyall’s Herald (C8) could’ve been worse, reckons Peter Miniutti of Ashbury: “Instead of opening your paper and finding something removed, you could’ve found an inserted centrefold of Barnaby Joyce. Talk about a page being re(a)d.”
“Like Peter Hayes (C8) I’m tired of the ubiquitous use of ‘influencers’,” says John Lees of Castlecrag. “My suggestion for an alternative description is ‘inflatulancers’ bearing in mind that all we hear from them is a load of hot air!” Paul Koff of Glenhaven finds himself on a similar path: “Because of the trite garbage most of them peddle, we’ve taken to calling them ‘effluencers’.”
“Our Irish chums have a very accurate way to describe influencers,” advises John Elder of South Brisbane (Qld). “Gobshites.”
“Stand aside ‘shevelled’ and ‘gruntled’ (C8),” declares Greg Phillipson of Aranda (ACT). “My wife sends me out in search of ‘gorm’ whenever I accompany her to the shops.”
Philip Aspden of Miranda is currently conducting “experimental English classes at the Dawu Experimental School in Hubei Province, China, with the Herald for company and reading about all the strife in the world, I’m happy to remain ‘mented’.”
For some reason, Les Shearman of Darlington isn’t keen on a live transmission of the execution of a man in a wheelchair in what he describes as “Capital entertAInment” and a “dead streamed event.”
“If Helen Lewin (C8) considers some football to be poetry in motion, might she agree that the Roosters as NRL Grand Final winners resembled poultry in motion?” posits Tony Early of North Turramurra.
“Edward Loong (C8) should add Adrian Connelly to his list of frequent Column 8 contributors who schooled with him at Parramatta back in the 1950s,” suggests Ralph Stone of Kellyville. “Eddie was two years ahead of me at Marist Brothers High. John Devitt was school captain and Paul Hogan school clown.”
The current bogong influx (C8) is being welcomed by creative types, according to Janice Creenaune of Austinmer: “I suppose many in Sydney may prepare for Halloween, like my daughter and her wife, and their Mothpocalypse Now-themed party. Moth costumes, (including Gretel the German Shorthaired pointer) and Bogong Brew in a cauldron. Any other moth-related ideas gratefully received.”
“The bogongs appear to be particularly frisky this year,” notes George Manojlovic of Mangerton. “Maybe they’re full of moth-elated-spirits.”
