Sara Duterte impeachment trial Day 39: What to expect
The Senate impeachment court on Tuesday is set to tackle the manifestation of the House prosecution panel to drop Article III or the bribery charges in the trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
Presiding officer Francis "Chiz" Escudero acknowledged on Monday the receipt of the October 6 manifestation by the prosecution, saying that the impeachment court is taking the matter “in advisement.”
“[The trial shall] resume tomorrow for the final manifestations to be made by the panel of prosecutors, as well as any other manifestations the parties wish to make, as well as administrative matters that the court need to address, if indeed the panel of prosecutors will persist in their intention to drop Article III and to rest all together,” Escudero said during the trial on Monday.
The impeachment court is set to resume the trial at 1 p.m. today.
The House prosecution has already presented three out of the four Articles of Impeachment originally filed against Duterte.
The first was Article IV or the alleged grave threats against President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and former speaker and incumbent Leyte 1st District Representative Martin Romualdez.
This was followed by Article I or the alleged misuse of confidential funds.
The prosecution on Monday finished with the presentation of evidence for Article II, pertaining to the allegation that the Vice President amassed millions in unexplained wealth.
The last witness the prosecution presented for its case-in-chief was financial forensic analyst Atty. Alexander Cabrera.
Should the prosecution rest its case today, it will be given time by the court to submit its formal offer of evidence in the impeachment trial. The defense is expected to comment on the matter. —Giselle Ombay/BAP/KG, GMA News
