J.J. McCarthy has given New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh plenty to consider after an encouraging display off the bench in their 34-27 defeat to the New Orleans Saints.
The quarterback replaced Jameis Winston in the second half and helped the Giants fight back from a 24-point deficit. Although New York fell short, McCarthy’s performance could put him in contention to start their next game.
The former first-round pick completed 11 of his 21 pass attempts for 243 yards, one touchdown and one interception, offering a bright spot in a difficult afternoon for the Giants.

McCarthy also made sure to acknowledge the support he received from New York’s fanbase, despite the disappointing result.
Speaking to reporters after the game, the quarterback said: “I’m just extremely honored to be a part of the New York Football Giants, because this fanbase is unbelievable.
“The passion, how they show up every single game, home and away, it means the world to wear this blue and to play for them. All love to this city and the jersey, and I’m just extremely grateful for them.”
His words underlined how much the opportunity means to him, while his performance gave Giants supporters another reason to be encouraged about his future.
McCarthy helped spark a late rally after New York had fallen 34-10 behind. He threw a touchdown to Isaiah Likely and contributed to another scoring drive, bringing the Giants within seven points before their comeback ran out of time.
The display could also create a selection dilemma for Harbaugh. Winston started the game but struggled as the Saints took control, leaving the head coach with a decision to make ahead of the Giants’ next fixture against the Houston Texans.
Harbaugh has not committed to making McCarthy his starter, but the young quarterback has strengthened his argument with his performance against New Orleans.
Selected 10th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, McCarthy has yet to establish himself as a consistent starter in the league. However, his showing in relief offered a reminder of his potential.
The Giants are now 3-2-1, and Harbaugh must decide whether McCarthy has done enough to earn the starting role as New York look to respond to their latest defeat.
