The Boston Red Sox are making more changes to their coaching staff after a turbulent 2026 season. The organization is moving two interim coaches into new roles for 2027, creating openings on manager Chad Tracy’s major-league staff.

MassLive’s Chris Cotillo reported the changes. Third-base coach Chad Epperson will become manager of the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox, while first-base coach Pablo Cabrera will return to his previous position as the organization’s minor-league defensive coordinator.
The moves give both coaches new opportunities to support Boston’s player-development system. However, they also leave the Red Sox searching for replacements at first and third base ahead of spring training.

Epperson joined Boston’s major-league staff after the organization dismissed Alex Cora and several coaches in April. Before his promotion, he managed the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, making his return to the minor leagues a move back into a familiar environment.
His appointment in Worcester also gives him responsibility for preparing prospects for the next step in their careers. The Triple-A club is the final stop for many players before they reach the majors, making the manager’s role important to Boston’s long-term plans.
Cabrera will also return to a role he previously held within the organization. As minor-league defensive coordinator, he will work on defensive development across Boston’s farm system rather than serving as the major-league first-base coach.
The latest changes follow the sweeping staff shakeup that began in April. Boston dismissed Cora and several members of his coaching staff after a difficult start, then relied on internal promotions to fill the vacancies.
Despite the disruption, the Red Sox recovered enough to reach the postseason. Their season ended with a loss to the New York Yankees in the American League Wild Card Series.
Now, the focus shifts to building a more settled staff around Tracy. Boston has yet to announce replacements for Epperson and Cabrera, leaving two important coaching positions to fill before the 2027 campaign.
