Microsoft and AMD have announced that FidelityFX Super Resolution 4.1, or FSR 4.1, is coming to Xbox, bringing AMD’s latest upscaling technology to consoles and handheld devices.
The technology will support the Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox Ally, Xbox Ally X, and Xbox Ally X20.
FSR renders games at a lower resolution before using machine learning to produce a sharper image. This reduces the amount of work required from the hardware and can free up performance for higher frame rates or other graphical improvements.
Xbox Ally Gets FSR 4.1 First
Microsoft has not provided an exact rollout date for Xbox Series X and Series S, describing support for the consoles as “coming soon.”
However, ROGAllyLife reports that FSR 4.1 will arrive in preview for Xbox Ally devices through Armoury Crate on October 23, 2026.
The update will reportedly add an FSR 4.1 toggle to the Command Center and support more than 400 games that currently work with FSR 3.1.
An earlier report suggested the base Xbox Ally would not support FSR 4.1, but that information was later corrected. The technology is also coming to the standard Xbox Ally.
Major Benefit for Series S
FSR 4.1 could be particularly useful for the less powerful Xbox Series S.
The console has previously presented challenges for developers because of its RAM configuration. Using FSR 4.1 to upscale games from a lower internal resolution could reduce the pressure to produce a native 1080p image while still maintaining image quality.
AMD has also demonstrated the performance improvements possible with FSR 4.1 in games such as The Blood of Dawnwalker.
Microsoft and AMD Continue Xbox Partnership
Xbox CTO Scott Van Vilet said Microsoft has worked with AMD for more than two decades across Xbox and Windows, including on console hardware, DirectX, Advanced Shader Delivery and AutoSR.
He said Microsoft and AMD worked closely to optimize FSR 4.1 for Xbox devices and give developers another option for balancing performance and visual quality.
The companies are also extending their collaboration to Microsoft’s next-generation Project Helix hardware.
According to Microsoft, Project Helix will use FSR Diamond as part of the technology powering the next generation of Xbox hardware.
For now, FSR 4.1 is expected to reach Xbox Ally devices first, while Microsoft has yet to announce an exact release date for Xbox Series X and Series S support.
