Coinbase’s Base launches “Earn & Borrow” for Ethereum layer-2 apps

Coinbase

Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer-2 network, Base, has introduced “Earn & Borrow,” an integration layer allowing applications to provide features such as variable-rate stablecoin yield and crypto-collateralized loans. This new system utilizes third-party protocols like Morpho and Aave. The update aims to enhance in-app access to credit and yield markets built on Base, rather than introducing a native lending protocol. Recent data indicates an average stablecoin yield of 4.45% in these markets, excluding incentives. This development could indicate a significant increase in Ethereum’s utility, potentially influencing market perceptions of its future price potential.

Key Takeaways

• Introduction of “Earn & Borrow” on Base suggests increased utility for Ethereum, potentially enhancing its market perception.
• Current market pricing for Ethereum reaching $10,000 by December 2026 remains low, with a 0.9% YES probability.
• The development is consistent with scenarios where Ethereum’s growing functionality supports higher future valuations.

What to Watch

Watch for any significant shifts in Ethereum’s price movement following the integration announcement. Observers will be keen to see if this development leads to increased adoption and use of Ethereum-based financial services. Additionally, monitoring any changes in stablecoin yields and loan demand on Base could provide further insights into the network’s impact on the Ethereum ecosystem.
