Although he was not the main star of another epic comeback by Real Madrid, Kylian Mbappé enjoyed a record-breaking night in the Italian capital, further cementing his place among the greats of the Champions League.
In a match that saw him become the youngest player to reach 100 appearances in the competition, the Frenchman also moved into outright fifth place on the tournament’s all-time top scorers list.
With his first-half goal against Roma, Mbappé took his Champions League tally to 72 goals, surpassing Real Madrid legend Raúl González. The French forward now stands alone in fifth place in the competition’s all-time scoring rankings.
Mbappé’s next target is compatriot Karim Benzema, who sits fourth with 95 goals. Beyond overtaking Benzema, the Frenchman will also be aiming to become the highest-scoring French player in Champions League history. The top three are Robert Lewandowski, with 109 goals, Lionel Messi, with 129, and Cristiano Ronaldo, who leads the rankings with 140.
Mbappé reached the milestone in his 100th Champions League appearance. Across 11 seasons in the competition, he has maintained an average of 0.72 goals per game while continuing to chase his first Champions League title. Although the ultimate team prize has eluded him so far, he has already finished as the competition’s top scorer twice: in 2023/24, sharing the award with Harry Kane, and last season.
The Frenchman’s 72 goals have come across spells with three different clubs. He scored six in nine appearances for Monaco, added 42 for Paris Saint-Germain, and has scored 24 for Real Madrid.
