A prominent crypto trader lost a seven-figure Ethereum position and reopened leveraged exposure minutes later, according to CryptoPotato and CryptoSlate.
A crypto trader operating under the handle Machi Big Brother was reportedly wiped out on the decentralized perpetuals exchange Hyperliquid, according to CryptoPotato. The report followed a run of gains that had reached roughly $12 million before the reversal. The outlet did not specify the exact size or asset of the position that triggered the liquidation.
CryptoSlate separately reported that the trader lost $269,000 on an Ethereum position. That report noted the trader opened another long position just seven minutes after the loss. The rapid re-entry suggests continued willingness to take on leveraged risk despite the setback, though the outlets did not detail the size or outcome of the subsequent trade.
Hyperliquid has become one of the most closely watched venues in decentralized finance for high-leverage perpetual futures trading. The platform allows traders to open large positions relative to their collateral, which can amplify both gains and losses. Public on-chain data on Hyperliquid makes it possible for outside observers to track large wallets in near real time, which has turned some traders into recognizable figures within the crypto community.
The name Machi Big Brother has circulated in crypto trading circles in connection with large, visible positions on the platform. Because Hyperliquid trades are recorded on-chain, communities have been able to follow this trader's activity as it unfolds. That visibility is part of why large wins and losses on the platform tend to draw rapid attention.
Leveraged perpetual trading carries elevated risk because positions can be liquidated automatically when price moves against a trader beyond a certain threshold. A liquidation forces the position to close, often locking in losses that can exceed the trader's original margin in volatile markets. The scale of the reported $12 million run, followed by a wipeout, illustrates how quickly leveraged gains can reverse on these platforms.
Neither CryptoPotato nor CryptoSlate detailed the specific leverage ratio used, the exact timing of the liquidation relative to the $12 million peak, or the trader's total position size at the time of the loss. The $269,000 ETH loss and the subsequent new long position described by CryptoSlate appear to be part of the same broader trading activity referenced in the CryptoPotato report, though the exact relationship between the two reported events was not fully specified.
The episode adds to a growing pattern of high-profile liquidations on Hyperliquid, where large, publicly trackable positions have periodically drawn scrutiny from the wider trading community. Such events often prompt discussion about risk management practices among traders who operate with significant leverage on decentralized platforms.
Market Impact
Individual liquidations of this size do not typically move broader crypto markets on their own, but they do highlight the risks embedded in high-leverage perpetual trading on platforms like Hyperliquid. Large, publicly visible losses can influence sentiment among retail traders who follow prominent wallets, sometimes affecting short-term positioning in heavily traded assets like Ethereum.
The episode also underscores the transparency trade-off of on-chain perpetual exchanges. While this visibility allows for real-time tracking of large positions, it also means losses and risky behavior, such as quickly reopening a leveraged trade after a loss, become public almost immediately, shaping how traders and observers assess risk on these venues.
The reported wipeout of Machi Big Brother's position on Hyperliquid serves as a reminder of the volatility inherent in leveraged perpetual trading. As more details emerge, the full scope of the trader's gains, losses, and subsequent positioning may become clearer.
