EXCLUSIVE: Fresh off directing The Beekeeper 2 for Miramax, Timo Tjahjanto has come aboard to direct The Burnout for the studio, sources tell Deadline.
Interesting comps here: The Burnout is billed as The Big Lebowski meets Jason Bourne. In the film, a washed-up former CIA agent, now living as a carefree burnout in Ibiza, is reluctantly dragged back into action.
With its “back-in-action” framing, the film also feels in the vein of the Nobody actioners starring Bob Odenkirk, the second of which was directed by Tjahjanto.
Sources said the script — by Tom O’Connor, with current revisions by Hunter Toro — was brought into Miramax by Arianna D’Andrea, VP Film Production & Development. The project falls in line with Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman’s mission to develop originals for film and TV while finding the right opportunities to mine the studio’s expansive IP library.
A genre filmmaker from Indonesia, Tjahjanto first garnered attention when he teamed with Gareth Evans to direct segment “Safe Haven” for V/H/S/2. He followed that up with The Night Comes for Us — an homage to 1980s Hong Kong action cinema, which became Netflix’s first Indonesian original — plus horror film May the Devil Take You, premiering both of those titles at Fantastic Fest.
In the last few years, Tjahjanto has risen to become an in-demand studio filmmaker, with work on Nobody 2 and The Beekeeper 2, the sequel to the acclaimed Jason Statham action thriller that grossed over $162M worldwide. The new installment is slated for release by Amazon MGM Studios on January 15, 2027. Currently in production on an untitled Indonesian thriller for Netflix, Tjahjanto is represented by WME, Entertainment 360 and attorney Marios Rush.
Over the summer, Miramax released its first Scary Movie in 13 years, with the Paramount horror spoof posting the biggest R-rated comedy opening in almost the entire span of the franchise’s absence — going on to more than $230 million worldwide. In television, the studio is fresh off the release of Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen Season 2, which debuted to 6.7 million global views, elevating from No. 3 on the global English-language TV chart to No. 1 in its second week.
Other upcoming film projects for Miramax include the Will Smith action thriller Supermax, a Serendipity redo, and Frankie Shaw’s 4 Kids Walk Into a Bank, all for Amazon MGM. Additionally, there’s an adaptation of the Amy Taylor novel Ruins, starring Vanessa Kirby and Sebastian Stan, the Statham-led action thriller John Doe, and James DeMonaco’s thriller Vigilant.
