DeSantis Urges Trump to Declare Major Disaster in Florida After Hurricane Isaías: Aid Sought for 15 Counties

In the wake of Hurricane Isaías, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has requested that President Donald Trump declare a major federal disaster to secure recovery resources for 15 counties in the northwest part of the state. This request also aims to provide direct economic assistance to families affected in eight of these counties.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) submitted the request, as announced by the governor's office on October 16.

The proposal includes funding for public infrastructure repairs, debris removal, emergency expenses, and potential support for temporary housing and private home repairs.

As of now, the federal government has not approved the major disaster declaration. Therefore, residents of the affected counties should not yet assume they will receive the requested individual aid.

Efforts to Secure Federal Assistance

"As recovery efforts continue, Florida has submitted a request for a major disaster declaration to the federal government. We are seeking public and individual assistance to support residents of the Panhandle, local governments, and the infrastructure impacted by the storm," DeSantis stated.

The governor also announced a partnership with Emergency RV to provide temporary housing for families who lost their homes or cannot return due to damage caused by Isaías.

Counties Requesting Federal Help

The FEMA Public Assistance request covers the following 15 counties: Bay, Calhoun, Escambia, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Jefferson, Liberty, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Wakulla, Walton, and Washington.

If Washington approves the declaration, eligible state and local governments, as well as certain non-profit organizations, could access federal funds to offset disaster response and recovery expenses.

Funding could support debris removal, emergency protective measures, and repairs or replacements for roads, bridges, public buildings, utilities, and other crucial infrastructure.

The governor's office emphasized the importance of these resources for smaller counties with limited budgets, where recovery costs can pose a significant burden on local administrations.

Individual Assistance for Residents

Beyond aid for public administrations, Florida also sought FEMA Individual Assistance for residents in eight counties who suffered damage to their homes or personal belongings.

These counties include Bay, Escambia, Gulf, Holmes, Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, Walton, and Washington.

If approved, eligible households may receive resources for:

• Temporary housing when primary residences are uninhabitable.
• Basic repairs to damaged homes.
• Replacement of essential personal property.
• Other necessary disaster-related expenses according to authorized programs.

These aids are designed to address unmet needs or those only partially covered by insurance.

However, being included in the state request doesn't guarantee that all residents will receive funds. Federal approval must specify available programs, and each applicant must meet the corresponding requirements.

How to Apply for FEMA Assistance

The Florida government explained that, once the federal declaration is approved and the registration period opens, eligible residents can submit applications through DisasterAssistance.gov or by contacting FEMA at 800-621-3362.

For now, this process depends on federal approval of the individual assistance requested for the relevant counties.

Affected families should retain photos of damage, housing-related documentation, and records of hurricane-related expenses, which can be useful when dealing with insurers and recovery programs.

Temporary Housing for Displaced Families

While awaiting a federal response, the state government announced a collaboration with Emergency RV to offer temporary housing to residents unable to stay in their homes after the hurricane.

The program will prioritize eligible families whose homes suffered severe damage, allowing them to remain close to their communities as repairs progress.

"We are committed to helping these families rebuild their homes, and in the meantime, we want them to continue living in their communities with minimal disruption to their daily lives," DeSantis asserted.

Interested individuals can check requirements and application procedures at EmergencyRV.org.

This temporary housing initiative is independent of the Individual Assistance funds Florida has requested from FEMA.

Damage Assessments Following Isaías

To support the major disaster request, state authorities worked with county emergency officials, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

The teams assessed damage to homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure to document the economic impact and unmet needs that local and state resources alone cannot address.

FDEM Executive Director Jared Perdue affirmed that teams had diligently gathered the necessary information.

"Our teams have tirelessly documented the impacts of Hurricane Isaías and identified the needs of affected communities," he noted.

Perdue added that authorities maintain coordination with federal partners to secure the additional assistance needed by residents during recovery.

For Public Assistance, FEMA evaluates eligible damage using economic indicators established at both the state and county levels. This information helps determine whether the disaster's scale justifies the requested federal intervention.

A Hurricane's Aftermath of Damage and Power Outages

Isaías made landfall near Destin in northwest Florida on the night of October 9 as a Category 2 hurricane, with sustained winds of approximately 165 kilometers per hour.

The storm damaged homes, roads, and power networks, causing coastal flooding and downed trees in various Panhandle locations.

Authorities confirmed at least two fatalities in Florida following the hurricane, while emergency services continued to assess the damage.

Power outages severely impacted the region. In the hours following the impact, several counties experienced widespread electricity disruptions, with damage to poles, cables, and other facilities.

The threat did not immediately disappear after Isaías weakened. Authorities warned of new flooding and recovery-related risks, including cleanup and repair work.

Additional Assistance for Impacted Residents

Besides pending federal programs, affected residents can turn to community services and organizations already offering assistance in northwest Florida.

Available resources include 211, which connects individuals to organizations providing food, temporary shelter, medical care, and other essential services, depending on local availability.
