The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, has detained four officers at the command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, for allegedly assaulting a young man at Ijagba, Sango-Ota.
The command spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, said in a statement on Sunday that an investigation into the incident has commenced.
This follows a viral video of the officers, accompanied by a civilian, pinning and handcuffing the young man.
A background voice in the video also alleged that the officers allegedly assaulted the young man for wearing camouflage trousers.
“The Ogun State Police Command has commenced an investigation into a video circulating on social media showing police officers in the company of a civilian in the Ijagba-Ota area of Ogun State.
“In a prompt response, the four officers involved have been apprehended, while disciplinary procedures have been initiated to establish the facts and determine the appropriate action,” Mr Babaseyi said.
He said the commissioner of police, Bode Ojajuni, has ordered “a thorough and impartial investigation” into the incident.
The command appreciated members of the public for bringing the video to their attention. It encouraged anyone with credible, first-hand information relevant to the investigation to cooperate with the appropriate authorities.
The command also urged the public to avoid speculation or circulating unverified claims that could prejudice the investigation.
