Palantir wants NATO to know one thing about its Maven AI system: nobody in America can turn it off.
On October 22, 2026, Palantir executive Louis Mosley told European allies that the company cannot remotely disable NATO’s Maven Smart System. That platform processes battlefield data for NATO’s headquarters.
“There are no kill switches. There’s no ability for Palantir or the US government to reach in and switch it off.”
Mosley, Palantir’s executive vice president for the UK and Europe, said NATO keeps full operational control of the system.
What Maven does and how NATO got it
Maven pulls in data from many different sources and stitches it together into a single picture. The goal is better and quicker military decision-making on the battlefield.
NATO finalized its purchase of the Maven Smart System in March 2025. The procurement process took six months, which by defense-buying standards is close to a sprint.
NATO awarded a €480 million tender for the system to boost its battlefield data processing.
The platform reached what NATO calls “full technical operational capability” in June 2026.
Why Europe is asking about kill switches at all
Recent disruptions to Starlink and Starshield services for Ukraine sharpened European anxiety about leaning on American technology.
Not every major ally has been persuaded. France and Germany have declined to adopt Maven for their own national militaries. Both have voiced concern about becoming overly dependent on US technology, with sovereignty and geopolitical tension weighing heavily.
What this means for Palantir, NATO and European defense
For Palantir, the stakes are commercial and reputational. A €480 million NATO tender is a flagship reference customer.
The France and Germany holdouts are the key thing to watch. Their refusal to adopt Maven nationally signals that public reassurance alone may not move policy.
For NATO, the episode highlights a structural risk. Alliance-wide tools work best when members actually use them. If major militaries opt for different systems, the promise of a single, integrated battlefield picture gets harder to deliver.
