Even if you aren’t especially green-fingered, chances are you’ve been struck by the beauty of bougainvillea at some point, whether you spied it cascading over sun-bleached walls on a Greek island or framing a sunny terrace in Italy. With its deep purple and pink leaves, the flower is usually synonymous with a Mediterranean summer, but Instagram reveals that nail artists are incorporating the bold magenta shade into autumn manicures, providing a refreshing alternative to darker, more brooding hues – like burgundy and claret – that tend to dominate at this time of year.
Perhaps we should have seen it coming. After all, bougainvillea purple was spotted on countless autumn/winter 2026 runways, including at Valentino, Balenciaga and Carolina Herrera, where shoes, skirts, dresses and accessories all provided a pop of purple. As Halloween approaches, nail pros have already been championing a spectrum of deep purple shades, but there’s something about bougainvillea – not quite purple, not quite pink – that makes it uniquely appealing right now.
For that ultra-glossy finish, a professional gel manicure is your best bet, but there are plenty of bougainvillea-inspired nail polishes that will help you recreate the look at home. Both H&M’s Nail Polish in Rum Raisin D'être and Nailberry’s Hollywood Rose occupy a cosy space between hot pink and magenta. Manucurist’s Bougainvillea Nail Polish leans a little more pink than purple, but still packs a punch.

Darker shades tend to stain natural nails, so it’s always recommended to apply a layer of base coat beforehand, followed by a high-shine top coat to lock everything in.
