Principal Secretary for Medical Services Ouma Oluga has urged Jaramogi Odinga Oginga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) health care professions to deliver their duties well and report to work following concerns.
Speaking during the visit on Sunday, PS Oluga said the Ministry of Health will be watching the health care workers, urging JOORTH's leadership to implement the reforms discussed in the forum.
"The public is watching you, but we are also watching you from the Ministry of Health," PS Oluga said.
"We will do more than watching you. We will support you. We will hold your hands. But we won't hesitate to use the stick."
He maintained added that the healthcare workers' safety must be treated as a national priority but must maintain professionalism of required standards.
This comes after the Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) urged the government to take urgent measures to mitigate the spread of the Ebola virus after Kenya confirmed its first case of the disease.
"We demand that all counties that don’t have a medical cover ensure that they provide the same for their healthcare workers. SHA must stop locking out healthcare workers from accessing services due to delayed remittances by the employers," KMPDU statement read.
Further, KMPDU stated that the government must confirm that isolation and infectious disease treatment units across regional referral facilities are functional, adequately equipped and staffed by trained personnel.
The Union added that healthcare workers and their unions must be meaningfully represented in national and county emergency response structures, citing that the frontline workers understand the gaps within the health system as they deal directly with patients.
