The South Yosemite Horizon League girls volleyball champion is a bit closer to being crowned. Matches that took place on Monday for Arvin, West and Kern Valley went as expected, a sweep for all three teams. Arvin blanked McFarland, West defeated Del Oro and Kern Valley beat Mira Monte.
Trouble is, there’s only one more league match for everyone and, just like Monday, none of the three teams will play head-to-head.
Based solely on Monday’s results and the number of league matches left, Kern Valley is 6-3, but can’t catch the current leader, Arvin (8-1). Kern Valley, with a win Wednesday at home against McFarland and Mira Monte defeats West (7-2), the best they could do is tie for second. West, meanwhile, needs a win over Mira Monte and Del Oro to top Arvin to earn a co-championship status. All Arvin has to do Wednesday is win and they’ll have the SYHL title all to themselves.
The South Yosemite River League title hangs in the balance tonight at Frontier High as the Titans host Centennial at approximately 6:15 p.m.
Centennial set up its end of the deal by sweeping Stockdale on Monday to enter this match with a 24-7 overall record and 8-1 in league play. The lone SYRL blemish for the Golden Hawks is a five-set match home loss to Frontier on Oct. 6, 28-26, 17-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-6.
Frontier took a 25-3 overall and 8-0 league record into its second-to-last SYRL match, at home Tuesday against Bakersfield. Either way, Frontier needs to win out to clinch its first league championship. A loss would mean a co-league title.

HS girls flag football
The regular-season finale for girls flag football will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday when Bakersfield Christian travels to Delano to play Chavez Collegiate.
BCHS brings a 20-2 overall record and 5-0 league mark into this game. The Eagles beat Chavez 44-6 in a previous head-to-head game on Oct. 1 at BCHS. Chavez Collegiate, playing its first season of CIF flag football, has a 12-3 overall mark and is 4-1 in league. Both teams have dominated the other two league teams, R.F. Kennedy and Delano, who along with Chavez gave Kern County four schools to have a girls flag football program in 2026. BCHS is in its second season.
Top players for BCHS include sophomore Isabella Soliz, senior Abby Elizalde, sophomore Tatum Martin, freshman Miah Mejia, senior Addilyn Prestridge, senior Tia Nichols, junior Kaylee Ouellette and junior Jozlyn Garza.
