A Dhaka court will rule on Thursday in the case of Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam, the former leader of the banned organisation Chhatra League, who stands accused of acquiring illegal wealth.
Dhaka Divisional Special Judge BM Tariqul Kabir will deliver the verdict, said Ariful Islam, the court's bench assistant.
Siam is the son of Syed Abed Ali Jibon, the driver of the former Public Service Commission (PSC) chairman, who is accused in a question paper leak case involving the civil service. Siam was once the relief and disaster management secretary of the Dhaka Metropolitan North Chhatra League. However, he was dismissed from his post in July 2024 on charges of involvement in question paper leak.
The court fixed the verdict date for Thursday on Sept 30 after hearing the concluding arguments from the prosecution and defence.
ACC Prosecutor Delwar Jahan Rumi claimed that he had been able to prove the charges and expects a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for the accused.
However, Siam's lawyer Rafiqul Islam says, "The ACC could not prove the property mentioned was in Siam's name. Therefore, he will be acquitted."
The recording of testimony in the case ended on Sept 13. The court heard the testimony of all 11 witnesses in the case. In the defence hearing on Sept 24, Siam proclaimed his innocence and sought justice.
On Jun 17, the same court had framed charges against Siam and ordered the case to trial.
ACC Deputy Assistant Director Zakir Hossain filed a case against Siam on Jan 5 last year. The case accuses him of acquiring illegal assets worth Tk 3.73 million from Sept 3, 2021 to Jun 30, 2024.
Following the investigation, Zakir filed a charge sheet against Siam on Dec 30. The investigation allegedly found information about Tk 3.18 million in movable and immovable assets belonging to Siam inconsistent with his known sources of income.
