Phillies’ Chase Utley content for now, but won’t shut door on managing someday appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Many fans want managers to bring fire into a clubhouse like the old days, exuding the intensity that defined Billy Martin, Earl Weaver, Bobby Cox and Lou Piniella, to name a few. Chase Utley was a throwback during his playing days with both the Philadelphia Phillies and Los Angeles Dodgers. Would he provide a similarly potent dose of nostalgia as an MLB skipper? The baseball-watching world will not get an answer to that question right now.
The Phillies reportedly gauged Utley’s interest in potentially occupying their managerial position, but he declined. While the 2008 World Series champion and franchise great did not care to address the speculation, he did share his current stance on serving a coaching role.
“I don’t see real upside in acknowledging these different types of rumors,” Utley told former teammate Erik Kratz on the “Foul Territory” podcast. “I can say over the past several years I’ve had a number of inquiries on my interest on getting back on the field. My answer has been honestly the same throughout. I’m enjoying watching my two young boys grow up. As you know, this time goes quickly, and I want to be around for them.

“I’m also in the process of starting a business that is interesting, it’s eye-opening. So, I have my hands full currently. At some point down the line, maybe that changes, but currently I’m happy where we’re at.”

Utley serves as a special assistant to Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, enabling the California native to work a much more flexible schedule than he would be able to as a big-league manager. The Phillies also inquired multiple times about Alex Cora’s potential interest and spoke with Raul Ibanez. They ultimately reunited with Don Mattingly, who filled in as interim skipper this year.
Chase Utley would certainly have been a fan-favorite choice, but he is not willing to fully commit himself to the game again. At least not yet.
