Lancashire have confirmed they will not be offering James Anderson a new contract, ending the England legend's 25-year career at his boyhood county.
The 44-year-old seamer took to social media to relay his dismay at the decision. Anderson was informed he would not be offered a new deal during a meeting last Monday with Lancashire's in-coming director of cricket Paul Farbrace and newly appointed chief executive Richard Kenyon, who cited the need to rebuild an ailing first-team squad.
Anderson was pushed into international retirement at the start of the 2024 summer, finishing with 704 wickets at an average of 26.45 across 188 Test matches, and it is uncertain whether he will continue his first-class career away from Emirates Old Trafford. He had intended to play on in 2027 and it is understood some counties are interested in Anderson's services next summer, after he took 50 dismissals at 17.68 this season to be named as Lancashire's Championship player of the year. Despite his input, Lancashire finished second bottom of Division Two, their worst-ever Championship finish.
Born in Burnley, Anderson debuted for Lancashire in 2001, a year before he earned the first of 401 caps for England. After being ushered out of Test cricket following the 2024 tour of India by England's management trio of Rob Key, Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes, he was given one final appearance at Lord's against West Indies. However, he decided to continue playing and give back to his county in their time of need.

That included assuming the club captaincy midway through the 2025 campaign, a role that became full-time for 2026 after signing a contract extension last November. He finishes his Lancashire career with 443 wickets across 112 first-class appearances, along with 83 wickets in 61 List A matches and 50 in 40 T20 appearances. In 2017, the club renamed the Pavilion End at Emirates Old Trafford Cricket Ground the James Anderson End.
In a statement released on Instagram, Anderson said: "I've supported Lancashire since I was kid, and so to get to play for them for 25 years was a dream come true.
"I have always found it special walking out to play at Old Trafford and have some incredible memories of doing so including the honour of being captain - if it was up to me it wouldn't have ended like this, but I wish the players and fans all the best for the future."
Confirming Anderson's departure, Farbrace said: "Jimmy is without doubt the greatest bowler Lancashire and England have produced. He has been a fantastic competitor throughout his career, with exceptional skill and an unwavering commitment to setting the highest standards in every dressing room he has been part of.
"Following a meeting with Jimmy and Richard Kenyon at Emirates Old Trafford on Monday 19 October, I spoke to Jimmy about our ambitions to rebuild our men's squad that is capable of securing promotion from Division Two of the County Championship and then challenging to win Division One over the next three to four years.
"We are keen to begin that rebuild now, both in terms of the playing squad and the wider professional cricket set-up, and to make important progress over the coming months. As part of those plans, I informed Jimmy that we had taken the incredibly difficult decision not to extend his playing contract for the 2027 season.
"I would like to thank Jimmy for everything he has given to Lancashire Cricket over the course of his career. His contribution to the Club has been immense, both on and off the field, and he leaves a lasting legacy. We have enormous respect for what he has achieved, and we will always be proud that he has represented Lancashire for so many years."
