Harare's car dealerships are reeling following the sudden death of flamboyant businessman Wicknell Chivayo, with traders now questioning whether they will ever be paid for vehicles delivered before his fatal helicopter crash.
Chivayo died on 30 September 2026 when a helicopter carrying him, his wife Lucy Muteke, two pilots and an aide went down in rural Marondera as the group travelled from his home in Chikomba district, Mashonaland East. His death sent shockwaves beyond his inner circle, reaching the dealerships that quietly kept his extraordinary gift-giving operation running.
The scale of Chivayo's vehicle dealings
Before his death, Chivayo became widely known for handing out luxury cars and large sums of cash to celebrities, pastors, lawyers and other recipients. Reports placed the total at over 300 vehicles and roughly US$47 million in cash, though new accounts from dealers suggest the actual number of cars distributed could be even higher.
Much of the supply flowed through Exquisite Car Sales in Harare, with a man known as Victor Matiyenga handling distribution. Additional vehicles were sourced from dealerships along Robert Mugabe Road in Eastlea and in the Braeside area. The typical arrangement allowed Chivayo to take delivery of vehicles first, with payment following within about two months, a structure dealers described as profitable while it lasted.
One dealer revealed that 15 Toyota GD6 Fortuners were collected on the very day of the crash, reportedly destined for members of the Johanne Masowe church in Mashonaland Central. Some of those recipients only learnt of Chivayo's death while the distribution was already underway, leaving the fate of those transactions unclear.
What happens to unpaid debts and promised gifts
Chivayo's final high-profile pledges reportedly included a 2026 Lexus GX 550 and a Range Rover Sport earmarked for two lawyers, neither of which had been delivered at the time of his death.
Legal experts have noted that all outstanding obligations now fall under the estate administration process. An executor must first be appointed before any debts are settled or assets distributed, a process likely to be complicated by cross-border holdings and pending legal matters. Informal promises, including those made publicly on social media, do not automatically carry legal weight during formal estate proceedings.

X users weighed in on the situation with a mix of scepticism and sympathy for all parties involved:
@ZimPerestroika said:
"All those who received cars from Wicknell Chivayo already have reg books in their names; it's all over social media, even the whole of Macheso’s band paraded registration books in their names. Dealers cannot simply take the cars back because they were not paid. They will have to claim their money from Chivayo's estate."
@cde_simba shared:
"Chances are, these dealers supplied Wicknell with some of his LAST batches of cars. His usual arrangement was to take delivery first and pay a few days later. Some deals may still have been pending when he died."
@TauBlakStallion urged:
"They just have to be patient. The deceased's estate will settle...unless if there is none."
@i_am_kunic argued:
"Chivhayo would say 'Fully Paid For' so zvekuti vavasina kubhadharwa ratova Drama nemanyepo."
@realneho1 asked:
"Funny stories: when people were collecting cars, they were ordered to collect cash. Also, how come you give someone stock and cash on top without receiving any kind of payment?"
