Lerato Nkabinde shared the images on her Facebook page, taking followers on a 25-year visual journey that began in 2001 when she was just three months old, and her mother was in her early thirties.
A Journey Captured Frame by Frame
Rather than a single before-and-after snapshot, Lerato offered something far more meaningful: a carefully curated collection of moments.
At age four, she and her mother shared a warm embrace, with her mum already 36 years old at the time. By eight, Lerato had grown noticeably taller while her mother was hitting 40.
She then skipped forward to her 18th birthday, where the two stood together with matching short hairstyles, her mother now 50.
The final photo, and perhaps the most striking, shows Lerato at 25 alongside her mother at 57. The growth across the images is remarkable, yet what caught most people's attention was how youthful her mother appeared despite the years that had passed.
Lerato did not go into detail about the circumstances that shaped their family dynamic, choosing instead to focus on what the journey represented.
She closed her post with words directed squarely at mothers raising children on their own.
"To all the single moms out there, you're doing so great," she wrote.
Social Media Users Left Emotional
The post resonated deeply with many, particularly women who saw reflections of their own lives in the images.
Zikhona Olwethu Ntshobeni wrote:
"Mommy ageing like fine wine; she doesn't crack, honey."
Rabelani Bugana commented:
"So the age is piling up, but your mom is stuck the woman is ain't ageing. I think husbands make us age faster...look at you looking so good at 57."
Zama-Gcina Kibido reflected on her own life, writing:
"Maybe mine is still on the way, 37 with zero kids."
Tinyiko Masingi was moved to tears, sharing:
"I'm looking at these images and crying cause you gave me glimpse of how me and my daughter will be like. I had her at 32years of age as well."
The post struck a chord well beyond Lerato's immediate circle, drawing hundreds of comments from people who saw in her mother's story a quiet but powerful example of resilience.
