LeBron James shows off the patch marking his historic 24th NBA season as he looks to keep his crown in his Sixers debut

LeBron James is used to making headlines with every move he makes. This time, ahead of his season debut with the Philadelphia 76ers, attention is turning to a small detail on his jersey. There’s no need to describe it to understand what it represents: James is about to begin a season no one in NBA history has played before.

Tonight’s game against the New York Knicks will be his first regular-season game with Philadelphia. It’s a high-stakes setting: the Knicks are the defending champions, and the Sixers are opening a new campaign hoping to get back into the title race.

A small detail for a historic season

“King James” is entering his 24th season and extending his own NBA longevity record. He also arrives as the league’s all-time leading scorer, with 43,440 points, and holds the record for most regular-season games played, with 1,622 entering the matchup against New York. The patch on his uniform could go unnoticed during his Sixers debut. It’s small, but its meaning and the story behind it are hard to miss.

LeBron spent eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, from 2018 to 2026. During that time, he led them to the 2020 championship and won Finals MVP. He also became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer while playing in Los Angeles.

Longevity alone doesn’t tell the whole story. In the 2025-26 season, he averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists with the Lakers. In the playoffs, he raised his scoring average to 23.2 points per game across 10 appearances. Those numbers show that his impact is still felt on the court, alongside the records he continues to add to his résumé.

Now with the Sixers, “King James” has another chance to compete for a championship and win the fifth title of his career. Philadelphia has brought him together with stars such as Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown in a bid to return to title contention. The season is just getting started, so it’s too early to make predictions. Still, the team has reason to dream: if it builds chemistry and sustains a high level of play, the goal could be within reach.

The small patch on his jersey is part of a much bigger story: a player who, after more than two decades in the NBA, still finds reasons to enjoy the game and show that every day brings a chance to start again. Tonight against the Knicks, LeBron isn’t just beginning a new chapter with the Sixers. He’s also testing, for another season, how long the reign of “King James” can last.
