From its humble beginnings in 2007, when founder Adedayo David Eweje sold men’s apparel directly out of the boot of his car at a bank parking lot, David Wej has steadily built one of Africa’s most formidable fashion empires.
On October 10, 2026, the award-winning international premium lifestyle brand marked another historic milestone by hosting an elite gathering tagged ‘The Exclusive Viewing’ at 42 Admiralty Road, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.
The high-octane event served as the official launch pad for David Wej Signature (DWS Sig), the brand’s newly minted luxury arm.
Created in direct collaboration with world-renowned textile artisans and iconic fabric mills including Loro Piana, Drago, Vitale Barberis Canonico, Kerry Knoll, Thomas Mason, and Brownmore, the new line represents the pinnacle of modern bespoke tailoring and traditionally inspired jacquard craftsmanship.
Reflecting on the brand’s remarkable journey, Adedayo David Eweje, Founder and CEO highlighted how creative evolution has driven the label’s growth over nearly two decades.
“The evolution of the brand is fully dependent on creativity,” Eweje stated. “We started as a corporate menswear brand, focusing mainly on suits for men. However, we have now grown into a fashion house where everything concerning men’s fashion is designed and manufactured.
“Today, we are launching David Wej Signature, the luxury arm of David Wej. We are collaborating with world-class artisans. When you want to offer luxury, you have to consider certain factors, which are the raw materials, the accessories, and the craftsmanship.”
Eweje emphasized that the decision to introduce the luxury line stems from a deep commitment to growing alongside the brand’s long-standing clientele, many of whom have evolved beyond off-the-rack attire.
“The fashion industry in Nigeria is the biggest in Africa, and the creativity is awesome; we just need to commercialize it the way it should be,” Eweje noted.
“David Wej is a premium brand, and it is luxury. We have served customers for 19 years, and we will continue to serve them. Some customers have outgrown ready-to-wear, that’s one of the reasons we are introducing ‘DWS Sig’ so we can grow with our customers.
“We are in line with world-class brands that have existed since the 17th century and are still top-notch, so the luxury client knows about it. Now, they have the opportunity to feel the fabrics.”
Highlighting the brand’s bespoke ideology, Eweje added, “We allow our customers to choose what they want, and we customise it to suit their preferences. What makes us different is the quality of our fabrics and our craftsmanship.”
When asked about his personal style, the creative head demonstrated a spirit of industry solidarity: “I wear my own brand, but when I have the opportunity to wear other brands I will wear Mai Atafo, Kimono Kollection, Africana, and T.D.A.”
A Storied Origin Story and Global Expansion
The trajectory of David Wej is a testament to entrepreneurial resilience and strategic vision. Eweje recalled starting the business in 2007 at a Guaranty Trust Bank car park near Access Bank, operating strictly out of his car trunk. The company officially launched in 2008 with the opening of its flagship store in Victoria Island, Lagos.
From that single location, the brand expanded across strategic commercial hubs. Today, David Wej boasts six prominent branches across Lagos:
Lekki Phase 1, Victoria Island, Ikeja, Yaba, Surulere and Murtala Muhammed International Airport.
The brand’s ambition, however, extends far beyond Nigerian borders. In 2021, David Wej made a landmark entry into Europe by opening a store in London, continuing its global penetration across the United Kingdom, Canada, the United States, and Continental Europe through daily international shipments. Furthermore, the label has solidified its international e-commerce presence through a strategic partnership with London’s leading online retailer, Wolf & Badger.
Uncompromising Craftsmanship for the Modern Gentleman
Speaking at the Lekki launch, Tola Obimakinde, Manager of the Ikeja branch, explained how the Signature line sets a new benchmark for African menswear by moving far beyond conventional ready-to-wear collections.
“The grand launching of the David Wej Signature brand is not the regular contemporary ready-to-wear,” Obimakinde explained.
“This branch is different because we are introducing our highest expression of modern tailoring, distinguished by superior fabrics, craftsmanship, and uncompromising finishing created in collaboration with some of the world’s finest fabrics like Loro Piana, Drago, Vitale, Kerry Knoll, Thomas Mason, and Brownmore. This signature brings together great men in the industry. We want to introduce our styles to the world by launching in Lekki.”
With “The Exclusive Viewing,” David Wej has once again redefined the boundaries of African luxury fashion, combining heritage craftsmanship, international sourcing, and bespoke elegance to cater to the modern global gentleman.
