Urban India had 666.09 million internet subscribers at the end of June 2026, compared with 448.08 million in rural India, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (TRAI) quarterly performance report. The urban base rose by 14.16 million from March, while the rural base rose by 7.21 million.
Urban-rural split
The urban internet subscriber base was 218.01 million larger than the rural base in June. In March, the respective figures were 651.93 million and 440.87 million, TRAI’s data showed.
TRAI’s quarterly counts include Bharti Airtel’s machine-to-machine (M2M) SIMs from the quarter ending March 2026. The rise between December 2025 and March 2026 therefore partly reflects a reclassification, rather than only new subscribers.
Internet subscribers per 100 people
TRAI reported 129.03 internet subscribers per 100 people in urban India in June, up from 126.8 in March. The rural figure was 49.07 per 100, up from 48.31. That left a gap of 79.96 subscriptions per 100 people between urban and rural areas in June.

These figures measure subscriptions per 100 people, not the percentage of residents online or the number of distinct people with internet access.
