As India pushes to expand rooftop solar power, getting households to adopt the technology requires more than subsidies and installation infrastructure. Many families also need someone to explain how the system works, whether they are eligible for financial assistance and how to navigate the application process.
In Uttar Pradesh, the Solar Didi initiative seeks to bridge this gap by involving women from self-help groups (SHGs) in spreading awareness about rooftop solar energy and helping residents understand government schemes.
The initiative is linked to the Centre’s Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, launched on February 13, 2024, to facilitate rooftop solar installations in one crore residential households across the country by March 2027.
While the central scheme provides financial assistance to eligible households installing rooftop solar systems, Solar Didis focus on taking information about the programme to communities and helping potential beneficiaries understand the steps involved in adopting solar energy.
HOW DOES THE SOLAR DIDI INITIATIVE WORK?
The initiative involves training women SHG members to promote rooftop solar adoption and improve awareness of available government support. According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, the programme includes training women SHG members under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana–National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM).
Their role can include explaining the benefits of rooftop solar, sharing information about eligibility requirements, guiding households through application procedures and helping residents understand the installation process.
For families unfamiliar with solar technology or government portals, such community-level guidance can make it easier to explore the available options. Solar Didis can also help connect households with the agencies responsible for implementing the scheme.
The emphasis is on awareness and assistance rather than providing a separate electricity subsidy. The financial support available to households continues to be governed by the rules of the PM Surya Ghar scheme.
WHY UTTAR PRADESH MATTERS
Uttar Pradesh has been expanding its renewable energy ambitions, with rooftop solar forming part of the broader effort to increase the use of clean energy. The Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) serves as the state’s nodal agency for renewable energy programmes, while the Uttar Pradesh Solar Energy Policy 2022 provides a framework for promoting solar power in the state.
The Solar Didi initiative adds a community outreach component to these efforts. By involving women from existing urban livelihoods groups, the programme can use established community networks to communicate information about rooftop solar and government assistance.
For households considering a solar installation, understanding the application process, the financial assistance available and the steps required to get a system installed can be an important part of the decision.
The initiative also offers women an opportunity to develop knowledge of renewable energy and participate in the expanding clean energy ecosystem. However, specific responsibilities, training arrangements and incentives depend on the applicable programme guidelines and local implementation.
WHAT DOES PM SURYA GHAR OFFER HOUSEHOLDS?
The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana aims to make rooftop solar more accessible to residential consumers by providing central financial assistance to eligible households. The scheme targets installations in one crore homes by March 2027 and is intended to help households reduce their reliance on conventional grid electricity.
The subsidy is available through the prescribed application and installation process, subject to eligibility and scheme conditions. Households need to follow the official procedures and use the designated channels to access the assistance.
Solar Didis can help residents understand these requirements and make more informed decisions before proceeding with an installation.
TAKING SOLAR AWARENESS BEYOND SUBSIDIES
The Solar Didi initiative highlights a practical challenge in India’s clean energy transition: making people aware of the technology and helping them navigate the process of adopting it.
Financial assistance can reduce the cost of rooftop solar, but households may still need reliable information before committing to an installation. Community-level outreach can help address that gap by bringing guidance closer to residents.
By combining rooftop solar awareness with women’s participation through self-help groups, the initiative seeks to connect the country’s renewable energy ambitions with local communities. Its effectiveness will ultimately depend on the reach of the training, the quality of information provided and how easily households can move from awareness to installation.
Solar Didi is therefore best understood as a community-based outreach and training initiative supporting rooftop solar adoption, rather than a separate household electricity subsidy scheme. The financial assistance and eligibility conditions remain tied to the PM Surya Ghar programme and its applicable guidelines.
