Football legends John Barnes and Andrew Cole visited Whitney Institute Middle School to inspire students through football activities and discussions on perseverance, discipline, respect and making positive life choices as part of the Don’t Cut Your Future Short initiative.
A spokesperson said, “History came alive for students at Whitney Institute Middle School as football legends John Barnes MBE and Andrew Cole walked onto the school grounds, transforming an ordinary school day into an unforgettable lesson in excellence, perseverance and possibility.
“Through the Don’t Cut Your Future Short initiative, led by Tammy L. Richardson-Augustus, JP, students received the rare opportunity to engage directly with two of the most celebrated figures in English football.
“The morning began with a field session, where twenty-four students participated in four football skills-and-drills stations comprising Under-12, Under-13, Over-13 and Girls groups. Barnes and Cole immediately immersed themselves in the activities, encouraging participants and sharing insights drawn from careers that have inspired generations of football fans around the world.
“The legends transitioned to the assembly hall, where they were welcomed by the electrifying sounds of the Whitney Institute Drum Line, whose spirited performance reflected the pride, energy and talent of the school community.
“Students then took centre stage, formally introducing both football icons through presentations based on their own research into the players’ careers, achievements and contributions to the sport.
“Addressing approximately seventy students from M1, M2 and Year 9, Barnes and Cole spoke candidly about the values that guided their journeys to success. Their messages focused on perseverance, self-discipline, respect for others, accountability and the importance of making good decisions both on and off the pitch.
“The highlight of the morning was the interactive “Huddle Up with the Legends” session, during which students posed questions to the visiting football icons. The discussion sparked thoughtful conversations about overcoming setbacks, handling pressure and finding purpose through hard work and determination.
“The visiting entourage included the legends and their representative team, Tammy Richardson-Augustus, JP founder of DCYFS, officers of the Bermuda Police Service, and Mr. Darren Woods of the Ministry of National Security’s Gang Violence Reduction Team, reflecting a collective commitment to youth engagement, positive mentorship and violence prevention.
“At the conclusion of the assembly, Ms. Richardson-Augustus invited students to proudly recite the school’s mission and motto:
“Keeping the Faith with Greatness of Spirit!”
“The moment served as a fitting reminder of Whitney Institute’s mission to provide a safe and disciplined environment where students achieve academic success, develop social maturity and become responsible, caring global citizens.”
Ms. Reeshemah Swan, Principal of Whitney Institute Middle School, praised the visit as an extraordinary opportunity for students. “We were honoured to welcome Mr. Barnes and Mr. Cole to Whitney Institute. Their willingness to invest time with our students created an experience that will remain with them long after the day ended. Ms Richardson-Augustus’ vision and commitment to Bermuda’s young people is commendable. We are deeply grateful that she chose Whitney Institute Middle School to host this exceptional event.”
A spokesperson added, “The significance of the day was further underscored by Mr. Clay Smith, distinguished Bermuda sportsman and paraeducator at Whitney Institute Middle School, who reflected on both the excitement generated by the visit and the lasting lessons it delivered.”
“Our students were absolutely thrilled to have [legends] in their presence. The excitement throughout the school was wonderful to witness, and the opportunity to receive their autographs was undoubtedly one of the highlights of their day. These are the kinds of experiences that inspire young minds to dream bigger. A very special thank you must go to Tammy, whose efforts in organising this initiative ….and connecting them with positive role models is truly appreciated. Football may have brought us together for this special occasion, but the messages of peace, unity, respect and community are what we hope will remain with our students long after the final whistle.”
A spokesperson added, “The visit aligned seamlessly with Whitney Institute’s rallying call: One Team. One Goal. No Limits.
“For Tammy L. Richardson-Augustus and Gemma Godfrey of ‘the Don’t Cut Your Future Short’ initiative, the day demonstrated what becomes possible when schools, community partners, law enforcement, youth advocates and world-class role models unite around a common purpose: creating pathways to success for Bermuda’s young people. We hope that the lasting legacy of the visit will inspire students to broaden their horizons and embrace excellence.
