Android users searching for WhatsApp on the Google Play Store may encounter a counterfeit version of the popular messaging app listed ahead of the official one. The lookalike app reportedly appeared in a sponsored search result and has accumulated more than 500,000 downloads, raising fresh concerns about Google's app review process.
According to reports, the fake listing uses the official WhatsApp icon, screenshots, and description to appear legitimate. It is published by a developer named ‘Agment Assets sallu,' which does not appear to have other apps listed on the Play Store. The report also noted that the counterfeit app remained available when the story was published.
Fake WhatsApp Listing Copies the Official App
The counterfeit listing closely resembles the genuine WhatsApp app, making it difficult for users to distinguish between the two at first glance. It copies the app's visual identity and promotional material, which may encourage people to download it without checking the developer details.
The difference becomes clearer when users examine the publisher information. WhatsApp LLC publishes the official WhatsApp Messenger app, which has more than 10 billion downloads. It also carries an Editor's Choice badge and has received hundreds of millions of reviews. The fake version has reportedly crossed 500,000 downloads despite being associated with an unfamiliar developer.
Sponsored Search Results Raise Security Concerns
One of the biggest concerns is the counterfeit app's reported appearance in a sponsored position above the genuine WhatsApp listing. Sponsored placement can increase an app's visibility, but it does not establish that the developer is officially associated with the brand.
The incident follows reports of a fake Google Chrome app appearing on the Play Store earlier in the week. That app reportedly attracted more than 100,000 downloads before Google removed it.
Early Access May Make Fake Apps Harder to Identify
The counterfeit WhatsApp listing may also be exploiting Google Play's Early Access program. According to Android Authority, this program can disable public user reviews for participating apps, potentially removing an important source of information for people deciding whether an app is trustworthy. However, the available reports do not establish whether the fake app contains malware or what information it may collect.

How Android Users Can Avoid Fake WhatsApp Apps
Users should check the developer name before installing WhatsApp and choose the official app published by WhatsApp LLC. They can also download it from WhatsApp's official website instead of relying on sponsored search results.
Anyone who has installed a suspicious version should uninstall it and switch to the official app. WhatsApp warns that unofficial versions can put users' privacy and security at risk, and it cannot guarantee that chat history from unsupported apps will transfer successfully.
