By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Cayo Northeast Area Representative Orlando Habet says the El Cayo Boardwalk’s kiosks remain empty because the San Ignacio Santa Elena Town Council will not issue trade licences to prospective tenants.
In a statement responding to public criticism, Habet said there are four kiosks available for rent at the Boardwalk, and rental agreements have already been signed.
But according to Habet, when those tenants applied for the trade licences needed to begin operating, the Town Council refused to issue them, leaving them unable to open despite their willingness to invest.
Habet said he shares the public’s frustration over the empty kiosks and recognizes the economic opportunity they represent for local entrepreneurs.
He said he hopes the issue can be resolved through dialogue and cooperation with the Town Council.
“Its success should not be defined by political differences,” the statement said.
The San Ignacio Santa Elena Town Council, led by UDP Mayor Earl Trapp, has not yet publicly responded.
