Former students of Newington College are reportedly “upset, hurt and shocked” following serious allegations against former teacher Deandra Kontou, who has been charged with nine sex offences.
Kontou, 32, who has also been known by her maiden name, Haralambidis, was arrested last month over allegations that she sexually assaulted and groomed a student in her care in 2019. The alleged victim was under 16 at the time.
The Greek Australian former teacher worked as a geography teacher at the prestigious all-boys school for two years before moving to Georges River College Senior Campus, a public school in Sydney.
She has been suspended without pay from her current teaching position.
Kontou has been granted bail and is required to reside at her home in Sydney’s south. She has reportedly appeared in public for the first time since the charges were laid while complying with her bail reporting obligations.
The serious allegations have reportedly left former students distressed, with members of the school community expressing shock over the case.
The charges remain allegations and have not been proven in court.
