Assam: The Cachar district excise department seized 2,472 bottles of illegal liquor worth an estimated Rs 14.48 lakh during an operation in the Dumkar area of Kalain, according to a report on Sunday. Two people were detained in connection with the seizure.
According to the initial report, an excise department team intercepted a Mahindra pickup vehicle and recovered a large consignment of liquor allegedly being transported illegally. The seized liquor was manufactured in Meghalaya. A total of 206 cartons containing 2,472 bottles were recovered from the vehicle.
The two detained persons have been identified as Hussain Ali and Sabul Hussain, who were reportedly travelling in the vehicle as driver and co-driver. Both are residents of the Channighat area under Dholai in Cachar district.
The seized liquor has an estimated market value of Rs 14,48,500, the report said.
Investigators suspect that the consignment was intended to be transported to neighbouring Mizoram or Manipur. Further investigation is underway to establish the source of the liquor and identify others who may be involved in the alleged illegal trade.
