KUALA LUMPUR: Perikatan Nasional has secured a temporary reprieve after the High Court today granted its application to stay the action taken by the Registrar of Societies (RoS), despite the coalition's registration having been cancelled two days ago.
The decision comes just nine days before nomination day for the Melaka election, with the coalition seeking to preserve its right to contest under its own name and symbol.
High Court judge Datuk Azizan Md Arshad ruled that the cancellation of PN's registration on Oct 20 did not automatically render its application for a stay academic.
He said the court found exceptional circumstances warranting the stay, particularly the potential harm to PN's political activities and its participation in the upcoming election.
Azizan said the court must consider the greater prejudice that could arise if the stay were granted or refused.
