During the Cincinnati Bengals' game against the Houston Texans, star wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase made an interesting gesture after scoring a touchdown, prompting an NFL fine almost immediately.
Chase came out and said that it wasn't what it looked like, though everybody understands exactly what he was trying to do. The NFL fining some of these guys for their celebrations isn't much of a surprise, though you could also argue they're just trying to have fun, even if some are a bit overboard.
As for Chase's celebration, it wasn't much of a surprise that the NFL did what it did. What does come as a bit of a surprise, however, is that the league decided to rescind two fines of $14,926, according to Ian Rapoport.
“Bengals WR Ja'Marr Chase won appeals of fines for his ‘people’s elbow' celebration, as two fines of $14,926 were rescinded from the Texans game,” Rapoport reported.
“From the appeals office letter, ‘On appeal, Mr. Chase … further contended that even if he committed the violation, his fine should be reduced because he received no warning that this was not allowed,' said the appeal letter. ‘He added that this is a new celebration with his teammate and that it is not offensive. Mr. Chase finally stated that the NFL is assuming the worst of him and his teammate without discussing with the NFLPA.'”
It's always interesting to hear how these players get these fines rescinded, with Chase saying he was never told he couldn't do this celebration.
That feels like a celebration he knows he shouldn't have done. Regardless, Chase can get away with it and save about $30,000 in his pocket.
