After breaking through last year with an 11-3 record and finishing No. 19 in the final AP poll, Virginia has had an up-and-down start to the 2026 college football season. Heading into Friday night's clash against Duke, the Cavaliers are just 4-3 overall and 2-2 in ACC play.
Virginia opened the season with commanding, double-digit wins over NC State and Norfolk State. But momentum soon faded after falling at home to West Virginia and then two weeks later at Florida State, with each loss exposing serious weaknesses on both sides of the ball. The Cavaliers briefly got back on track with a narrow win over Syracuse, but then dropped another game on the road to No. 24 SMU last weekend.
The offense has struggled to stay consistent against tougher opponents, and injuries have only made it more difficult. Now just hours before their crucial matchup against Duke, Virginia has been dealt another blow, this time to junior wide receiver Kameron Courtney.
According to On3's Pete Nakos, Courtney is expected to miss Friday night's game against the Blue Devils with an undisclosed injury. He also missed last week's game against SMU.

Courtney is a junior wideout who was a three-star prospect in the 2024 class, choosing Virginia over offers from North Carolina, Indiana, Boston College, and Duke, among others. After playing a smaller role in the offense his first two seasons with the Cavaliers, he was on the verge of breaking out this year before the injury.
Through five games this season, Courtney has posted 204 yards and two touchdowns on a team-high 18 catches, averaging 11.3 yards per catch. He has quickly become quarterback Beau Pribula's go-to target alongside junior transfer Da'Shawn Martin. Courtney's best game came against Delaware on Sept. 26, hauling in four catches for 89 yards and two touchdowns.
Wide receiver Rico Flores Jr. has also been ruled out against Duke, while Dylan Cope is listed as doubtful. Courtney's absence would leave Virginia down another pass catcher and arguably their most talented one.

Virginia's schedule doesn't get much easier either. After Duke, the Cavaliers will visit No. 17 Wake Forest on Oct. 31, then host California and North Carolina before closing out the season on the road at Virginia Tech. With just five games left in the season and two wins needed to remain bowl-eligible, Virginia can't afford any more setbacks.
