The first is the Canadian Experience Class, designed for skilled workers who already have Canadian work experience.
The second is the Federal Skilled Worker Programme, which targets skilled workers whose professional experience was gained outside Canada.
The third is the Federal Skilled Trades Programme, open to workers who hold recognised qualifications in a skilled trade.
Meeting the criteria of any single programme is sufficient to enter the pool, though candidates who qualify under multiple programmes may benefit from a stronger overall profile.
How the application process works
Once eligible, applicants create an online profile and enter the Express Entry pool. Canadian immigration authorities then conduct rounds of invitations, extending offers to the highest-ranked candidates in each draw.
Those who receive an Invitation to Apply must submit a complete application within the stipulated timeframe, after which officials review the submission and issue a decision.
Central to the ranking process is the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS), a points-based framework used to score and compare profiles within the pool.
The CRS evaluates a range of factors, including an applicant's skills, level of education, language proficiency, work experience, and other supporting criteria. Candidates with higher CRS scores stand a greater chance of receiving an invitation during each draw.
Canada has increasingly relied on Express Entry as a primary channel for attracting economic immigrants who can contribute to its labour market and broader economy.
How many skilled workers is Canada targeting?
In related news, Canada plans to admit up to 230,000 temporary foreign workers in 2026, creating potential employment opportunities for Kenyan job seekers hoping to work abroad.
The programme allows eligible foreign nationals to take up jobs in Canada, depending on employer demand, occupation requirements and the relevant work permit conditions.
However, competition for permits remains strong, and meeting the eligibility requirements does not guarantee approval.
