Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defense briefly activated emergency alerts in the southern cities of Najran and Jizan on Thursday, warning residents of potential danger before announcing that the threat had passed.
The National Early Warning Platform for Emergencies issued alerts in Najran and Jizan, urging residents to follow safety instructions, according to the Civil Defense.
The agency later announced that the danger had passed in both cities.
Authorities did not specify the nature of the threat.
The alerts came a day after the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen said it had intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by the Houthi group toward Riyadh.
Warning alerts were activated in the Saudi capital and nearby Al-Kharj governorate before the Civil Defense announced that the danger had passed in both locations.
Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition supporting Yemen’s internationally recognized government since 2015 against the Houthis, who have controlled Sanaa and several other provinces since 2014. The current escalation began in July after a period of relative calm following a UN-brokered truce that started in April 2022.
