Meta's free Home Link dongle is real, and so is the disclaimer on its product page: the community skills that run your lights and TV can change or break, and they are explicitly not for home security, emergencies, or medical needs. That fine print is the most honest thing in the box.
Most people stop paying attention once they realize a piece of hardware is free. You sign up, you wait, and eventually a small box shows up at your door. But with the Muse smart home platform, the hardware is just the start of the story. As we noted in our previous coverage, Meta is currently managing a claim queue for these devices. While reports suggest a 5,000-unit count and link the project to Nat Friedman, those figures remain unverified by official company channels. What is verified is the fine print, which says plainly what this gadget will and will not do for your living room.
The Home Link is a USB-C device built on the ESP32-C5 chip. It sits on your network and acts as a bridge, so Muse can reach devices you already own. Setup is straightforward: plug it into a power source, pair it via Bluetooth LE in the Muse app, and choose the Wi-Fi network it joins. On a normal Tuesday, a dongle that turns on your lights or controls your TV is the entire appeal. The fine print is the part that tells you what the promise will not cover.
The Home Link product page includes a blunt safety disclaimer: Skills are built by the community, so they can change or break. Have fun with them, but don’t rely on them for anything safety-critical like home security, emergencies, or medical needs. Devices mentioned here are made and sold by other companies, and Meta doesn’t endorse or warrant them.
That line draws a real divide between two models. Established ecosystems like Apple Home run the opposite way: the Apple MFi Program gates access to the HomeKit specification, certification tools, and badge artwork behind enrollment, and a Matter accessory sold must be submitted for certification via the Connectivity Standards Alliance process. The alliance markets Matter as the seal of approval that says smart devices work reliably together. The badge means someone checked. In the Muse model, the burden of reliability sits with the community and the user.
There is a second divide, this one inside Meta’s own offer. The Muse gadget SDK is open source under Apache-2.0, and the README invites developers to build their own gadgets on ESP32 boards or a spare Raspberry Pi. It also says, in its own words, that it is built by hackers, for hackers, just for fun, and that tinkering can brick boards and void warranties. Yet the Home Link unit you claim is a closed product. The product page says it only runs official firmware and cannot be reflashed. You are invited to build your own version of the technology; the hardware in the box is locked.
For those interested, the offer is active as of October 13: free with an active Muse subscription in the United States, limit one per subscriber, shipping in October, first come first served. Claiming holds your place in line, and the page is explicit that it is not an order. Meta says it will notify you when units are ready to ship.
As we explored in the free dongle problem, a free gadget is where a company’s experimental software meets the reality of a living room. The practical read for a buyer is simple. Treat the Home Link as a hobbyist tool, not a utility. If you want the thing that runs home security, emergencies, or medical needs, the product page itself tells you to look elsewhere. If you want to tinker with community-built integrations for lights, speakers, and TVs, the fine print is telling you exactly what to expect. It is a sandbox, not a foundation.
