Texas just set up a natural experiment on the power of conspiracy theories—and whether it matters if they’re debunked.

It seems, finally, that the strange episode involving James Talarico and a nonsense story about a mental health facility has concluded. The story’s greatest promoter, the man who claimed to hold the smoking-gun evidence showing the Senate candidate had been institutionalized, declared on Thursday that the matter was over.
“Frankly, this entire situation has been blown completely out of proportion,” wrote the social X user Rhein Amacher, somewhat bafflingly, given his own singular efforts to blow the situation up. “I’m not going to speculate beyond the information available or continue fueling a controversy based on an unverified claim. As far as I’m concerned, this matter is closed. It’s time to move on to more substantive issues facing voters.”
It was an odd statement, as it didn’t quite recant the story, which has been thoroughly debunked. (“Everyone can listen and draw their own conclusions,” he said.) But other anti-Talarico accounts went quiet on the matter after that, and the social media campaign to portray Talarico as a man in a state of emergency, too mentally ill to represent Texas in the Senate, fizzled out.

Afterwards, we were left to grapple with what this bizarre saga had meant. This conspiracy theory had blown up fast, taken over the discussion of the Texas Senate race for a week at a crucially important time, and died abruptly. In the world of political conspiracy theories, it can often be mysterious why some take off and others flounder. This one did something else, reaching extreme heights but never achieving the sustained success of more entrenched conspiracy theories. It may have been the blatant partisan hunger of this one that took it on this trajectory, or some other dynamic in the community that sought to prop it up.
But whatever the reason, the outcome of this strange episode may tell us something important about the limits of political tactics involving big and reckless lies. By virtue of being everywhere and then falling apart so completely, the hoax has become a natural experiment in whether a ridiculous conspiracy theory can move the needle in a close election—even after it’s thoroughly debunked.
If you missed this whole saga, it began with the flu. On Sept. 30, after days of in-person campaign events, Talarico made a virtual appearance at an event, saying he was sick. He then apparently came down with a pretty bad case of the flu and made no public appearances until Oct. 9, when he appeared at the Austin City Limits music festival.
In that time, a story took off on the right. It began with small accounts on social media speculating or claiming that Talarico was out not because he was physically ill but because he was mentally ill. On Oct 7, Paxton released an ad saying Talarico was “missing” and appeared at a rally with Trump in San Antonio. At that rally, he started a chant of “Where is James Talarico?”
Over the next three days, the story grew, amplified by a number of conservative media outlets; Republican figures talking of “sources” in the know, and a guest on Steve Bannon’s War Room podcast. On the 10th, the first piece of “evidence” emerged to feed the narrative: Caroline Wren, a GOP fundraiser, posted flight records showing that on the 9th, the day of Talarico’s reappearance in Austin, a private plane had flown from from Ohio to Austin—suspicious, apparently, because the Ohio airport wasn’t far from a mental health facility where a Houston judge had sought treatment in 2023. This plane theory had first come from an X account called “TickleTexts,” who did not seem to consider that the Austin City Limits festival draws visitors from all over the country.
But the story really shot off the next day when the MAGA influencer Nick Sorter, seizing on Wren’s starting point, posted an audio clip that seemed to be of a somewhat confusing phone call with the Ohio mental health facility, the Lindner Center for Hope. The phone call had come from Amacher—the man now complaining the situation has been blown out of proportion—who said he had called the center, pretending to be a member of Talarico’s family. In the recording, Amacher pressed an employee after she said there was no record of Talarico; She eventually said “it look[ed] like” Talarico had been discharged that same day. But that made no sense: Talarico had been seen at Austin City Limits the day before that.
Still, there was a brief high, before people had worked out the impossibility of this claim, in which conservative Texas accounts celebrated their triumph, with some calling on Talarico to exit the race. Elon Musk promoted the story to his 241 million followers. But that evening, the Lindner Center of Hope posted on X to correct the record: Talarico had never been a patient. Talarico later provided home security footage to the New York Times that showed he had been home the entire time. Most players involved were forced to acknowledge the whole story had been nonsense.
It was strikingly bad luck for Talarico to fall ill for so long so close to the campaign’s conclusion. (According to the CDC, Talarico’s diabetes can make the flu worse.) But once it was revealed that the whole narrative was built on lies and fantasies from minor X accounts, puffed out with baseless conjecture and easily disprovable claims, the glee seemed to turn to a rare incidence of embarrassment among right-wing media. Writing on Tuesday, Fox News, evidently smarting from the incident, tried to deflect blame back onto Talarico. His “viral hospital rumor has been debunked,” the account wrote in a post accompanying an article about the debunking. “But the bigger story may be why his campaign sat on the evidence while the conspiracy theory exploded across social media for days.”
We are at an age of remarkable ubiquity, speed, and traction of campaign conspiracy theories, made all the worse by the tech companies’ retreat from content moderation. Republican leaders and conservative media and influencers constantly encounter rumors like this; those who amplified the Talarico-hospital story chose to allow the loudness of its believers to determine its legitimacy, and not the facts.
The easiest read on this whole episode is that Paxton’s supporters are anxious and desperate to hold onto a previously safely red and symbolically important state. Talarico has been polling slightly above Paxton recently, and Republicans have poured enormous amounts of money into the campaign. It certainly looks desperate, going big on a conspiracy theory that anyone clear-eyed about the situation must have known would inevitably be debunked. Paxton has a whole host of scandals; Talarico only has J.D. Vance implying Talarico is gay and the time Talarico called God nonbinary. It makes sense that Paxton’s side would be antsy.
For now, it’s difficult to determine how much the conspiracy theory will matter in November’s election. It’s possible that it was almost entirely self-contained in conservative conversations on X—people who were never going to vote for Talarico anyway. It’s also possible that it went beyond that, and that voters who lacked either the time or the inclination to follow the story through to its debunking will go to the polls next month believing they are choosing between a candidate who spent a week in a mental institution and one who didn’t. In what’s forecast to be a close race, even a marginal number of such voters could matter.
(There’s a third possibility, perhaps one too outlandish to take seriously. And that’s that Paxton and his team may pay some sort of penalty for pushing a story that fell apart instantly upon making contact with a shred of reason. The lesson of Trump’s decade atop American politics is that the penalty for lying is generally nonexistent, but this may just be the exception.)
Which of those three possibilities—the story flopping, working, or backfiring—emerges is an important barometer of where we stand in 2026, and whether the truth still has any purchase in our modern era.
If a couple of weeks from now we’re hearing that voters were turned off by their fear of Talarico’s fragility or instability, we’ll know things are worse than ever. But if this whole episode is dismissed and laughed off as the misadventure of a few desperate attention-seekers, then it’ll be a sign: Even in one of the hottest battlegrounds in the country, reality still matters.
