The Great British Baking Show feels a little different this year — and that’s not just because for the first time ever the bakers got to bring their loved ones into the tent for the first ever “Audience Choice” week! No, there’s a new sassy judge working alongside Paul Hollywood. Iconic cook book author and food programming host Nigella Lawson joined The Great British Baking Show on Netflix this year, replacing long-time judge Prue Leith. But why did Prue leave The Great British Baking Show?
The Great British Baking Show first premiered on the BBC as The Great British Bake Off in 2010. Over the years, it became an international pop culture juggernaut, first crossing the pond as a PBS favorite before finding its eventual home on Channel 4 in the UK and on Netflix worldwide. The original judges of the show were the aforementioned Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry, an iconic culinary star in the UK. When The Great British Baking Show left the BBC in 2017, Berry chose to stay loyal to the BBC (who have continued to produce her cooking shows since). Prue Leith then joined the show as judge, introducing the show to her spectacular collection of colorful spectacles and pop art accessories.
So why did Prue leave the Netflix hit? Here’s everything you need to know about Prue Leith’s exit from The Great British Baking Show in 2026…
Why Did Prue Leave The Great British Baking Show in 2026?
Prue Leith left The Great British Baking Show to spend more time gardening. I’m serious.
In a January 21, 2026 Instagram post, Leith announced her departure from the program and very valid reasons for retirement:
“After nine series and judging more than 400 challenges, I have decided to step down as a judge on The Great British Bake Off,” Leith wrote, explaining that “now feels like the right time to step back (I’m 86 for goodness sake!)”
“[T]here’s so much I’d like to do, not least spend summers enjoying my garden. Whoever joins the team, I’m sure they’ll love it as much as I have. I feel very lucky to have been part of it.”
Since then, she’s been updating her Instagram and promoting her new book, Being Old… and learning to love it!
Who Is Nigella Lawson, Prue Leith’s Replacement on The Great British Baking Show?
Nigella Lawson is a 66-year-old British food writer, television presenter, and former journalist who revolutionized food television with her first show, 1999’s Nigella Bites. That series followed her life as a home cook in London, rustling through overpacked pantries, indulging in late night treats, and caring for her children. (Today you can easily fall into a hole on YouTube watching bootlegs of this show.) Lawson went on to become a super-successful cookbook author with a series of future appearances on British and American television.
Where Is The Great British Baking Show Filmed?
The Great British Baking Show is currently filmed on the grounds of Welford Park, a country house and estate located in Welford, in the county of Berkshire in England (which is about 65 miles west of London). The estate is actually open to visitors several times during the year and there are even quaint rental cottages you can stay in.
The Great British Baking Show has used Welford Park as its primary filming location over years, specifically 2014-2019 and 2022 – today. A “Bake Off bubble” at Down Hall subbed in for Welford Park during the COVID pandemic, while the tent literally moved around the UK in early seasons.
